Part II

Boy, Trixie thought when she had gotten home from the library and was in her room, How am I going to read all these books in 2 weeks?

She had borrowed ten books. They were all advice about becoming the school president and tips on getting people to vote for you.

Trixie started on Advice from a School President by Allie Gator. Before she knew it, it was ten o’clock. Trixie marked her page, put the book away, got her pajamas on, and climbed into bed.

Rrrring! Rrrring! Trixie sat bolt upright in her bed. Why is my phone ringing at three in the morning? Trixie thought as she picked up her phone.

"Hello?" she said.

"This…is…a warning…" said a deep voice that was almost a whisper.

"A warning for what?" Trixie asked, nervously.

"Tell…Mr. Buxton…you…do…not…want…to…become…school… president."

"But I want to become school president," Trixie said. "And anyway, I don’t have to listen to you." Trixie hung the phone before the mysterious caller could say anything more.

I wonder who that was, Trixie thought as she fell back to sleep.

"So, Trix," Mart asked the next morning at breakfast, "did you get any mysterious phone calls asking you to solve a mystery yet?"

"Well, yes and no," Trixie said. An astonished look came over everyone’s faces.

"What do you mean?" Mr. Belden asked.

"I got a weird phone call from someone who was faking their voice. It was three in the morning, too! The person said, ‘This…is…a warning…’ Then I asked the person what it was a warning for. ‘Tell…Mr. Buxton…you…do…not…want…to…become…school…president.’ So I said, ‘But I want to become school president.’ Then I hung up the phone with a bang. I only have a clue about who might have called."

"Who d’you think it is?" Bobby asked. "Tommy Craney?"

"No," Trixie laughed. "I think it’s Jessi Billings."

"Why do you think it’s Jessi?" Mart asked. "What did she do that makes you think she would make a prank phone call?"

"Well," Trixie explained. "Yesterday she was acting all moody and mean because she wasn’t a chosen candidate."

"I see," said Brian. "Well, I’m in her class. I’ll try to keep and eye on her for you."

"Thanks," Trixie said.

After school, Trixie called up Honey.

"Hello?" Honey answered.

"Hi, Honey," Trixie said. "It’s me, Trixie."

"Oh, Trixie! It’s about time!" Honey said. "I-I got just great news for you!"

"Huh?" Trixie said.

Beep. BEEEEEP!

"Oh no!" Trixie moaned. "The battery’s dying!"

"Hang up and run over to my house! The door’s unlocked. I’ll be in my room! Hurry! I’ve got to tell you about—"

"Honey?" Trixie said into the receiver. "Oh, brother."

Trixie stormed out the front door and jogged over to Manor House. Just as Honey had said, the front door was unlocked. Trixie entered. She ran upstairs into Honey’s room. She saw Honey quick turn off Batman, her favorite TV show.

"Okay," Trixie said. "What’re you so excited about?"

Settle down, Honey, Honey thought. She’ll never understand me if I don’t. Aloud she said, "Well, I was just watching Batman. He told Robin to invite one of his classmates over to his house for lunch. Batman and Robin thought that his classmate, Ronny, was involved with the crime."

"So?" Trixie said, thinking Honey was going mad. "What does that have to do with our mystery?"

"Oh, don’t you see?" Honey pleaded. "While Ronny was at Wayne Manor, Bruce and Dick would question him!"

"I still don’t understand," Trixie said, impatiently.

"Oh, we could invite Jessi over for lunch tomorrow!" Honey practically screamed. "It’s the perfect opportunity! We just ask her a couple questions, not giving a hint about what we’re doing, and then we can determine whether or not she made the prank phone call!"

"Oh, Honey," Trixie said. "You’re such a genius! I would’ve never thought of such a thing! And it’s such good luck that tomorrow’s Saturday so that we can invite her over for lunch tomorrow, and not have to wait for next Saturday!"

Honey giggled at Trixie’s complicated sentence. "Let’s make a list of all the questions we can ask. I’ll meet you tonight at eight o’clock in the clubhouse so we can make two copies of one list of all the questions both of us have thought of!"

"Alright, Honey!" Trixie said. "It’s a date! Tonight at the clubhouse at eight o’clock!"

* * *

"How many did you come up with?" Trixe asked Honey at eight o’clock in the clubhouse.

"I don’t know," Honey said. "I didn’t count them."

"Well," Trixie answered. "What are they?"

"Who do you like to talk to on the phone? Who do you hang out with? What do you like to do in your spare time?"

"Those are pretty good," Trixie said. "I wrote: Who are your best friends? What do you do at recess? Do you have any plans for next year? If yes, what are they?"

"Those are pretty good, too," Honey said.

They set to work on the master list.
