I seem to be writing in “themes”, so here is the next story to the ‘tomorrow’ theme. This is just Part 1. This one is set approximately one month after ‘All of our Tomorrows’.

 Fears of Tomorrow

by Cheryl

Part One

Trixie stayed by the phone waiting for a call from Hallie. Her cousin had phoned earlier in the week asking if she could visit New York and stay with her family. Trixie chewed her lip wondering what was up with Hallie. She very rarely called or visited.

Trixie was so busy she hadn’t even been able to set the date for her wedding to Jim, but she’d readied for Hallie’s visit just the same.

The phone rang and Trixie picked it up on the first ring.

“Hello?”

“Hey, sweetie, miss me that much that you had to rush to the phone?”

“Yeah, that’s it.” Trixie grinned into the phone at the sound of Jim’s voice.

She quickly explained that she was waiting for Hallie.

“Ok, I have to go into the city tonight for a meeting with my financial advisors. I’m not sure when I’ll get back,” Jim told her.

“No problem. Hallie will get here eventually. If you get back early enough, stop here at the farm.”

“I don’t want you to be up too late.  You know you have to be up early tomorrow. I want you to have your wits about you on the job.”

Trixie rolled her eyes at the phone, glad that Jim couldn’t see her. He’s just worried about you! she reminded herself.

“I know. I hope Hallie is tired from her trip and won’t want to gab all night.”

Trixie had gotten a job at the Sleepyside Police Department. It was just a stepping stone for getting some official experience before she and Honey opened their agency. Trixie planned to work there for awhile, then quit when she and Honey opened the agency.

Delay in finding the perfect office space had caused the two to rethink their plans. They both decided to take jobs at the Sleepyside Police Department.

Trixie heard a car pull into the driveway.

“I think Hallie’s here, honey. I’m going to go.”

“Ok. Tell her I said hi, and I’ll see her soon. I love you.”

“I love you too, bye”

Trixie hung the phone up and walked to the kitchen door. Hallie was getting out of a red Neon.

“Hey, cousin!” Hallie called and waved.

“Hi, Hallie. How was your trip?” Trixie asked, walking out to stand beside her car.

Hallie got a suitcase from the back seat.

“Uneventful.” She answered. “Seems quiet. Where is everyone?”

“Moms and Dad had dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Lynch. Mart is out with Di; Bobby is with Larry and Terry at Di’s.”

“And where is Loverboy?”

“Jim? He has an appointment tonight, but he is otherwise busy getting the school built and set up.”

Hallie nodded, walking through the door when Trixie held it open.

Hallie inhaled the scents of Crabapple Farm. It was apples, cinnamon, and fresh bread. She’d always found comfort from the house.

“Moms said to give you the guest room,” Trixie said, leading the way down the hall.

Hallie put her bag on the bed and opened it.

“I’ll let you unpack, and I’ll get our dinner out. Mom’s left a casserole in the oven for us.”

“Sounds good, Trix.”

Trixie left her alone and went into the kitchen. She pulled the ingredients out for a salad, and proceeded to chop up vegetables for it.

Hallie came back out after a few minutes and helped Trixie finish their salad. She put it on the kitchen table, and turned to see Trixie pull the casserole from the oven.

“Iced tea or lemonade?” Trixie asked.

“Tea,” Hallie said.

Trixie made them each a tall glass of tea after instructing Hallie to get started.

They ate in silence for just a moment, and then Trixie couldn’t stand it any longer.

“So, what brings you here?”

Hallie swallowed, and then said, “Um, I have a surprise for you.”

Trixie’s brows rose, and she asked, “Oh, what’s that?”

Hallie carefully laid her fork down and looked at Trixie.

“I graduated from the police academy. I took a job here in Sleepyside as a police officer.”

Trixie stared at Hallie in silence.

She frowned and opened her mouth several times before she could form the words.

“Hallie? I--I didn’t think, I mean, I didn’t know--I am surprised. I didn’t know you wanted to be a police officer.”

“I know, I was kind of surprised too. But I love it, Trix.”

Hallie looked at her cousin, hopeful her news would be met without opposition. Their relationship had come a long way since their childhood rivalry.

Trixie took a deep breath and smiled at her cousin.

“I know from experience that it’s a great profession. Congratulations, Hallie.” Trixie held her tea glass up to make a toast. Hallie breathed a sigh of relief and clanged her glass to Trixie’s.

“So, when do you start at the Sleepyside PD?” Trixie asked.

“Tomorrow.” Hallie looked at her anxiously.

Trixie stared at her in stunned silence for an instant and then she burst out with laughter.

Shaking her head, she said, “Well, at least you have company. Honey and I are starting tomorrow, too.”

The cousins finished their dinner and had retired to the living room catching each other up on what was happening in their lives.

“So, have you set the date yet?”

“No, I just haven’t had time to get to that yet.” Trixie blushed.

They were interrupted with the arrival of Peter and Helen along with Bobby.

After the greetings were made, Trixie excused herself to go up to bed. Hallie agreed that she needed to get some sleep, too.

The next morning came and Trixie made her way down to breakfast. She was only mildly surprised to see Jim having breakfast with Hallie at the table.

“Good Morning,” Trixie called to both of them.

Jim stood immediately. “Good morning, beautiful.” He kissed her before reaching out to hold her chair for her. Helen set a plate in front of her. The eggs and French toast were steaming as she drizzled the  syrup over the top.

“So, how did your meeting go?” Trixie asked.

“Everything is on track. I transferred more money to the schools account now that we are ready to fill it with beds, school supplies, and other necessities.”

“I heard about your school, Jim.  Congratulations. When do you think you’ll be ready for students.” Hallie asked.

“The plan is September 1st. Thanks.”

Trixie ate her breakfast quickly and excused herself to change for work.

Jim waited for her to come back down.

Hallie had also left to change, and wasn’t in the kitchen when Trixie came in. Jim was setting his coffee mug in the sink when he heard Trixie on the stairs.

Turning, he said, “What time do you have to be there?” Then he just stared as if in shock.

“Jim? Is something wrong?” Trixie asked with a puzzled frown.

“Huh? No. Nothing is wrong.”

Trixie smiled, “You give a good impression of it though.”

Jim looked at her confused.

“No, um, everything is fine. I was just surprised.”

“Surprised?”

“I wasn’t, um, it’s just--“

“Yes?”

Jim shifted nervously.

“I guess it’s the uniform, Trix. It just caught me off guard.”

“You know I’m a police officer.”

“Yes, but it’s the first time I’ve seen you in uniform and it just made it all so, um, real.” Jim kept his eyes downcast.

Trixie took a step toward him and laid her hand on his cheek.

“Jim, look at me,” she said, waiting for him to do that. “I am trained as a police officer. I carry a gun, I have back up and I don’t go into situations that I shouldn’t anymore. I’m not 14, but I am 22. I am a big girl and I can handle myself.”

Jim stared into those blue depths and nodded.

“I know all of that, Trixie. It just became a reality for the first time, I guess. I’m sorry.”

Hallie returned to the room, stopping any more of the conversation.

“All set, cousin?” Hallie asked.

“Yeah, just give me a minute to say goodbye to Jim,” Trixie answered her, not looking at her, but at Jim.

“Sure thing.” Hallie grabbed her bag and headed outside to wait for Trixie. She had the impression she had interrupted something and didn’t want to stick around where she wasn’t needed or wanted.

Trixie waited until the kitchen door had slammed shut before continuing to speak to Jim.

“Are you ok?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. You go on, I’ll see you later.” He bent to kiss her.

“Are you sure?” she asked skeptically.

“Trixie Belden, go to work!” Jim said forcefully. “I’m fine, I said, and you have to go or you’ll be late your first day! Molinson will have a fit.”

Jim added the last with a smile, and kissed her again. He drew her close to him and held for a long minute.

“I love you, be careful. Maybe tonight we can set the date for the wedding?” he whispered into her hair.

“I will. It’s my first day. I think I will be on desk duty for awhile, knowing Molinson. At the most, I’m in danger of a paper cut!” Trixie smiled teasingly. “And setting the date sounds good. I love you,” she added with a last kiss.

Jim watched her bound out the door and leap into her car with Hallie. Then he slowly finished cleaning up their breakfast mess when Mrs. Belden came into the room.

Helen had to say ‘Good Morning’ to Jim twice before he acknowledged her. Jim jerked when he finally heard her.

“Oh, sorry. I--” He gestured toward the door.

“You were otherwise occupied with watching my daughter go to work?”

Jim just nodded.

“Can I get you more coffee?” she gestured with the pot she was pouring.

“Um, no thanks. I have to get to the school.”

“OK, have a good day, don’t work too hard!” she called as he slipped out the door, quietly closing it behind him.

Jim walked up the hill to the school. He felt like he was in a fog. What is wrong with me?

He was saved from answering his own mental question when his newly hired instructor and friend, Robert Townsend stuck his head into Jim’s office.

“Hey Boss! Are you still interviewing assistants today?”

Jim grinned in spite of his inner turmoil of the moment.

“Rob, you can still call me Jim at work.” Jim shook his head.

Robert answered his grin with one of his own.

“Yes, I know that. But it doesn’t change the fact that you are my boss. Hence, the name Boss.”

Jim rolled his eyes and sat heavily into his desk chair.

“Yes, I have an interview today for my assistant, why?”

“No special reason, just thought I’d be on hand to ‘help’ you this time.”

“Such a thoughtful friend you are Robert.” Jim smirked. He knew that Robert was hoping he’d have another applicant like the last one. “I think I can handle it on my own, but thanks.”

Rob grinned and shrugged.

“Ok, if you say so, but can I lurk in the hall?”

“No! Go to your office or room!” Jim laughed.

Robert was staying in a room ‘on campus’. He was just one of the live in staff members that Jim wanted on the school premises at all times.

He’d also hired a cook and a cook’s assistant in the last month. They were a mother /daughter team and also lived in a small apartment setting in the back of the dorms.

Mrs. Aggie Renshaw was a retired, widowed lady looking for something to keep her busy now that her kids were grown. Her daughter, Inez, was recently divorced, and needed a job. Working with her mother and staying with her at the apartment, was working out the best for her and Jim. They were both wonderful with kids and Jim looked forward to having the female input with the boys.

Jim checked his papers on the desk and straightened them before the interview. He was trying not to think of Trixie on the job.

Come on, Frayne! You’ve known since she was 14 that she was going to be a detective and involved with police work! This didn’t come as a surprise!

Maybe not, but, Jim couldn’t shake the feeling that had come over him when he had seen her in her uniform.

There was a knock on his door, and a small, slightly overweight woman entered. She looked to be in her early 50’s. She came forward to his desk, extending her hand to shake his.

“Mr. Frayne? I’m Laura Anderson. I’m here for my 10:00 am interview.”

Jim shook her hand and couldn’t help but be relieved that this applicant wasn’t going to be flashing any of her body parts at him, like the last applicant had.

The interview began and ended with Laura Anderson  being a very strong contender.

“Ms. Anderson, I have your resume and references. I also have a copy of your criminal back ground check. I need to check everything over then I will be contacting you. Probably as early as tomorrow afternoon.”

Laura’s eyes widened.

“That quick? That is wonderful, thank you, Mr. Frayne.”

Laura left, and Robert stuck his head in again. This time he had Mart with him.

“Is that the new assistant?” Mart asked.

“I think so, I mean if her references check out and all.” Jim looked at them questioningly.

“So, Jim, feel up to lunch in town? With us?” Robert asked.

Jim scanned his desk and realized his afternoon was clear until  later this afternoon when he was going with Regan to check out some horses that were for sale near by.

“You know, that does work for me. Are you buying?” Jim quirked a brow at him.

“Why do you think we asked the rich boy out to lunch?” Robert teased.

Mart laughed and said he would pay for lunch today if they would only get going since he was starved.

The three men laughed and went out the door to get into Mart’s SUV.

The sat in a booth at Wimpy’s and Mart charged head long into his burger.

Rob laughed and looked to Jim, who in turn picked up his own burger and took a huge bite.

Between bites, Mart ate his fries and looked at Jim.

“So, when are you and my sister going to set a date for this wedding?”

Jim swallowed and took a drink of his vanilla shake.

“Ask her, I have been waiting on her.”

Mart nodded, “She has been busy with this new job starting now. Di and I might be married before you are!”

Jim anxious to change the subject, jumped on that little tidbit.

“Oh? Are you telling me you’ve proposed?”

Mart choked on his mouthful of burger.

“No, I mean not yet. But we’ve talked about it, and now that we are done with school and getting settled into our careers--well, it won’t be too much longer.”

Rob chimed in noticing Jim shifting uncomfortably.

“Well, I think everyone is busy lately, and they’ll set the date soon enough.”

Jim nodded and swirled his straw in his shake. The other guys continued to make small talk while Jim was lost in thought.

The sudden feeling of foreboding had settled over him before he saw it coming. He felt a chill run down his spine and his breath caught in his chest. What is happening to me?

No sooner had the thought formed that he finally became aware of his surroundings again. Blinking, he tried to swallow a bit of his shake, ignoring the way his hand shook as he brought it to his lips.

Rob and Mart continued to talk between themselves, oblivious to the inner turmoil of their friend.

Trixie and Hallie rode home chatting about their first day at the police station.

Trixie had gotten to ride with Spider for a time while Hallie rode with Tad, who  was also on the force now. Other than that brief ride around Sleepyside, they were stuck behind a desk for the day.

“I hope we get to be out on patrol more,” Trixie said.

Hallie laughed at her cousin. “Does Molinson know what desk work is doing to you?”

Trixie grinned in response, “Probably! It’s his revenge for years of my “detectiving” on his watch.”

They turned into Crabapple farm’s drive and parked the car.

“Hal, let’s get the Bob Whites together tonight for a cook out! You haven’t seen all of them yet!”

“I know, Brian isn’t even here yet, and Mart is busy with Diana and the school! I have not seen Honey, except for passing her at the station today!”

“Honey was with that Officer Brunswick today. I wonder how she did. She was hoping to be with us more. Maybe tomorrow,” Trixie said as they let themselves into the house.

Calling to her mother, she let her know they were home. A tall, dark, handsome figure came from the living room area and filled the doorway waiting to be noticed.

Trixie glanced up when she saw movement in the corner of her eye.

“Brian! You’re home!” she ran to hug her brother with Hallie close behind.

“Hey sis! How goes it? Hi, Hallie, it’s good to see you.” Brian hugged each of them in turn.

“Oh, Brian, I’m so glad you’re here. Hallie and I were just talking about getting the bob Whites together tonight, maybe cooking out at the lake.”

Brian opened his mouth to respond, but was interrupted by Mart and Diana bursting into the kitchen from outside.

“Already ahead of you, Trix,” Di said breathlessly. “The Bob Whites are all heading to the lake as we speak.”

“We have a cooler packed and Honey is meeting us there with another. You’d better get changed,” Mart added.

Trixie and Hallie looked at the other in their uniforms and rushed in opposite directions to change. They met again in the kitchen and Brian was seated at the table waiting for them.

“Mart and Di went ahead with the cooler,” he told them.

“You trusted Mart alone with food? Are you crazy?” Trixie laughed.

“I trusted Di with the food and Mart. I think she can handle him,” Brian said, eyes twinkling.

The trio laughed as they headed out the door to walk down to the lake. It had been a warm July day, and Trixie was looking forward to taking a dip in the cool lake water. She’d put her suit on under her shorts and t shirt.

Brian moved ahead of the girls when they reached the lake to take his girlfriend to the side to greet her properly. Everyone else had finished college and moved into a profession of their choice. Brian was still pursuing his, with long hours and a lot of the hard work still ahead of him.

Honey was an understanding and supportive girlfriend, even though Trixie knew she missed Brian terribly. Summer was here, though, and Brian had a few weeks home with them, and they were going to enjoy that fact to the max.

Trixie glanced around. Mart and Diana had deposited their cooler, and made their way to the lake. Honey had it already unpacked the cooler she’d brought, in between speaking quietly with Brian. Hallie followed Mart and di towards the water. Trixie looked again, and realized Jim wasn’t here.

A hand on her shoulder turned her around and she was staring into familiar green eyes.

“Hi,” she said moving into his arms for a kiss.

“Hi,” Jim answered and gave her that kiss. Jim glanced around the group. “Looks like the gang’s all here.”

“All except for...” Trixie started to say, but was interrupted.

“Dan!” Honey called out.

Jim and Trixie turned as one and saw Dan coming into the fold. Honey and Trixie hugged him, and Brian and Jim moved forward to shake his hand.

“Glad you could make it,” Brian said.

Mart and Di were making their way out of the water to greet him, too, and Hallie followed at a more sedate pace.

After the initial greetings were made, the group of Bob-Whites seemed to part and Hallie still stood at the outskirts of the group.

Dan looked at her long and hard. She looked as good as ever, he thought.

Hallie’s long dark hair was loose about her shoulders and she wore a white bikini that set off her early tan and natural coloring perfectly. A smile worked its way very slowly across her mouth, and she stepped forward to give Dan a hug.

“Hi, Hallie. How are you?”

“I’m good, Dan, it’s good to see you,” she drawled.

Someone pressed a soda into his hand and the group broke apart. But Dan’s eyes stayed on the dark-haired goddess in front of him.

Hallie caught him staring several times before he shook himself and looked to Trixie who was sitting in a chair next to Jim.

“So, Trix, ready to give up Sleepyside for the city yet?”

Trixie grinned, not seeing Jim stiffen next to her.

“Nah! I have enough excitement here, I don’t need the NYPD to keep me happy.”

The line of conversation was dropped when Honey announced that their dinner was ready for the grill. The Bob-White men took over grilling duties, and the girls put the salads out on the table.

Dan glanced at Jim as he watched their burgers on the grill.

“Jim, how’s the school coming?”

Jim looked up startled by the sound of Dan’s voice.

“Oh, it’s coming along fine. It should be ready for students by September 1st.”

“That’s good.” Dan looked again to where Hallie was standing.

When Jim didn’t add any more to the conversation, Dan moved over to speak with Hallie.

“Hallie. How do you like Sleepyside now that you’re living here?”

Hallie smiled at him. “It’s getting better everyday!”

Hallie spun around to go talk to Di, leaving Dan in shocked silence.

Their food was cooked and ready for them to eat. They quickly polished off the burgers, salads and chips.

After everything was cleaned up, the Bob-Whites dispersed to private areas with each other.

Brian took Honey’s hand and they walked around the lake. Mart and Di wandered toward the row boat, with the intentions of rowing out to the middle of the lake. That left Dan and Hallie looking at each other and Jim and Trixie.

Dan cleared his throat, “Hallie, walk with me?”

“Sure, Dan”

They walked towards the woods and walked side by side, not touching.

Jim watched them go, disappointed somehow that he was left alone with Trixie. What the heck was that? I love Trixie! She is everything to me.

Trixie, clueless to his inner thoughts, walked toward him and plopped down into his lap. Jim jumped a little in his surprise. He had missed her movement while lost in his thoughts.

“Hi, handsome!” she said kissing him lightly on his lips.

“Hi, beautiful.” Jim returned her kiss and wrapped his arms around her to hold her tightly against him.

Trixie pulled her head back and looked into his eyes.

“Wasn’t there something about setting a date mentioned?” she asked with a twinkle in her eye.

Jim jumped up and set her on her feet.

“Trix, we’d better wait on that. I mean, we are both so busy. We shouldn’t rush into the date just because we need to set it yet. You know what I mean?”

Trixie frowned and tried to catch up. He was talking so fast.

“Ok, whatever you want to do. Is everything alright, Jim?” Trixie looked up at him in concern.

Jim shrugged, “Why wouldn’t it be okay?”

Trixie knew he hadn’t answered her question but they were interrupted by the return of some of the Bob-Whites.

Jim yawned and said he had an early appointment, and said he was going back to the Manor House. With a quick peck on Trixie’s cheek, he walked away.

Trixie watched him go, frowning in confusion.

Honey sensing her mood, came up to put an arm around her shoulders.

“Trixie, come on, Brian and I will walk you home.”

“Should we wait for Hallie?” Di asked.

Trixie looked at her brothers. Brian shook his head, “She knows the way home.”

The group left their picnic site and walked down to Crabapple Farm.

Trixie wondered fleetingly if there really was something bothering Jim, but she decided he’d tell her if there was something wrong.

Part Two

Meanwhile in the woods…

Dan walked beside Hallie silently contemplating his next move.

He felt an attraction to her, always had. It was more than physical, although he’d never deny that aspect. He and Hallie had hit it off immediately.

Dan’s hand reached for Hallie’s when they came to a spot that was uneven and rough. He didn’t let it drop after they had passed that area. In fact, it seemed that Hallie had moved closer and had tightened her hand a little.

“Dan? Do you really like being a cop in the city?” she finally asked.

“Yeah I do. There are kids there that are just like I used to be. I am feeling like I make a difference there.”

“You’d make a difference anywhere.” Hallie looked at him with admiration.

“I don’t know about that. But I got a second chance and maybe there are some kids that can turn their lives around if they too, were given that chance.”

“You turned out to be a good boy, Danny.” Hallie said jokingly, but somehow he felt she meant it. Her praise made him blush a little.

They reached a small clearing and Dan motioned for her to sit down on a large boulder. He stood next to her and looked down into her eyes.

“So, Hallie Belden, what made you want to be a cop?”

“I think I was bitten by the bug when I visited my cousins when we were younger. They made it seem so exciting, that I decided to go to the academy when I couldn’t come up with anything else I wanted to be.”

“Do you like it?”

“Yeah, I do. I know I haven’t gotten to do much yet, but, I rode with Tad yesterday, just for a short time. It was exciting in its own way. I hope I get to go out on patrol soon, and leave the desk work behind.”

Dan nodded.

Hallie slid over on the boulder and patted the space beside her. He took the hint and sat down. The space was wide enough for him to sit but his leg was up against hers. She didn’t seem to mind.

“Are you staying with your family?” he asked.

“Yeah, for now. Auntie and Uncle Peter said I could stay as long as I need to, but I want to have my own apartment. Once the money starts rolling in, maybe I can swing that.”

“I have a small place in the city, but I really love coming back here to Mr. Maypenny’s cabin. I come home every chance I get,” Dan revealed.

Hallie smiled at him and he felt the air rush from his lungs and he was mesmerized with those blackberry eyes. Dan slowly lowered his head towards hers and waited to see what her reaction would be.

Hallie tilted her head up just a fraction of a degree but that was all the encouragement that Dan needed. His mouth came down on Hallie’s gently until she put her arms around his neck and pulled him closer.  Then Dan felt a tremor run through her body into his. It was electrifying. He pulled her closer and deepened the kiss.

By the time they parted their lips, they were both gasping for air. Dan stared down at her, wondering what she was thinking.

“Wow!” Hallie said and touched her finger tips to his lips. Her eyes searched his face.

Dan let out a short laugh.

“Yeah, wow about sums that up.”

Hallie smiled again, and Dan pulled her into a hug.

“Um, Dan, can I ask you something?”

“Anything.” Dan pulled back far enough to look into her face.

“How come we never did that before now? Because I’m thinking if you had kissed me like that before, I would have moved here a long time ago.”

Dan slowly grinned and shrugged, “I guess all I can say is better late than never!”

And he kissed her again.

Trixie awoke the next morning, slightly foggy. She hadn’t slept well the night before. With a groan she pulled herself from the bed and went to take a shower.

When she was finished, with her hair still damp, she went down to breakfast.

Hallie was just coming into the kitchen from the guest room.

“Morning,” Hallie mumbled.

“Morning.” Trixie took a seat as Helen was pulling fresh muffins from the oven.

The coffee was already on the table along with 2 mugs.

“Well, I know Hallie came in late, but what is your excuse, Trixie? Helen asked. “You went to bed early.”

“Hallie came in late?” Trixie asked, instantly awake. She looked toward her cousin with a brow quirked in inquisition.

Hallie shrugged and grinned.

“Dan and I took a longer walk than we’d expected.”

That was all she said and promptly changed the subject to something less revealing.

They ate, and then left the kitchen to change into their uniforms.

Honey beeped the horn on her car from the driveway.

Trixie and Hallie rushed out to get into her car. Honey was driving them into work that day.

“Hi, you two!” Honey greeted them.

“Hi Honey!” the cousins chimed.

“What do you think Molinson has in store for us today?” Trixie asked as Honey maneuvered the car onto Glen Road.

Honey laughed, “Probably more filing and answering the phones.”

Trixie frowned in disappointment.

“I know, I wish we could get into a case. There has to be something we can do.”

“Patience, Trix!” Hallie grinned.

They arrived at the station and went their separate ways. By lunch, Trixie had all of the desk work that she could handle. Her frustrations grew and she was down right cranky by the time she got to Wimpy’s to meet Honey and Hallie.

They commiserated with her, as they were in the same position. By the end of the day, Trixie was ready to punch something or someone.

She knew she was capable of so much more, and looked forward to the day when she could show everyone that. Especially the male chauvinists like Brad Teske.

Officer Teske thought that women should stay home and have babies, not play at being a cop.

Honey dropped the girls off at Crabapple Farm’s mail box. With a wave, she headed up the hill to the Manor House.

Trixie and Hallie walked up the drive and talked about their work that day. They heard the sound of a car engine and turned to see Jim was driving up behind them. Hallie waved at Jim, and continued walking toward the house, while Trixie waited for Jim to park.

She smiled at him when he got out of the car.

“Hi there! I am so glad to see you!” she stood on her toes to kiss him.

Jim’s hands rested on her hips and he smiled down at her.

“I’m glad to see you too! Can we go somewhere for dinner tonight?” Jim asked.

“That sounds heavenly! Give me a bit to change?”

Jim nodded. “Take all the time you need.”

Trixie took him by the hand and they walked into the house together. Trixie quickly explained to her mother that they were going out to dinner, and then ran up the stairs to change her clothes.

She took a fast shower and came back down dressed in an airy spaghetti-strapped dress. She found Jim in the kitchen talking quietly with her parents.

He stood when she entered the room. “All set?” he bent to kiss her cheek whispering in her ear that she was beautiful.

They walked out arm in arm and Jim opened the car door for her. They drove quickly to the restaurant on the outskirts of town.

Jim held her hand as they walked into the dimly lit restaurant and they were immediately seated. The waitress promptly took their order and Jim gazed at his love while waiting for their drinks.

“So, how’s it going?”

Trixie looked up at him, surprised. “Do you mean at work?”

Jim nodded. And she went on to fill him in on the happenings at the Sleepyside PD. Trixie hardly noticed the effort Jim put forth to actually listen to her.

I have to be supportive. I have to. I love her more than anything. She deserves my attention.

Jim shook himself when he realized that Trixie had stopped talking.

“Well, it um, sounds like you love working at the department,” he said, looking down at his fingers playing with the edge of his napkin.

“It’s great. I just wish we could sink our teeth into some cases.”

Jim nodded, unable to speak past the lump that suddenly found its way into his throat. He cleared his throat several times.

“So, what do you think of the Dan and Hallie situation?” Trixie asked, sipping her soda that the waitress had since dropped off.

“Is there a Dan and Hallie situation?” Jim asked.

“Ha! You’d have to be blind or in another country to miss the fireworks that go off when they are together.”

“I guess I have been a little distracted then.”

Trixie looked at him for just a beat before continuing with her ideas of Hallie dating Dan.

Dinner continued, but Jim was distracted. Trixie noticed and tried to ask him if he was ok, when he brushed her off. He let her monopolize the conversation.

They decided to head back home since they both had to work in the morning. Jim walked her up to the porch and held her hand looking at her in the moonlight.

“I love you, Trix.  Good night.” Jim kissed her and turned to leave.

“Hey, wait one minute, Mr. Frayne.” She held his hand still, and wouldn’t let it go.

Jim waited, somewhat impatiently for her to continue.

Trixie’s blue eyes seemed to look right into him. She felt him trying to pull his hand from hers, although he didn’t use any great strength.

“Jim, what is wrong? Please tell me. I know there is something bothering you.”

This time, Jim yanked his hands free from her grasp.

“There is nothing wrong, Trixie.” He turned to walk to his car. She followed.

“Jim, come on, I know you better than anyone. Tell me, please?”

Jim turned half way around, looking down at her. His eyes snapped with anger.

“There is nothing wrong, Trixie. Drop it before there is!” Jim stalked away to get into his car. Starting it up, he slammed it into gear and sped out of the driveway.

Trixie stood for a moment in shock. He was angry with her for asking that.

There is definitely something bothering you! I will find out what it is! And I will solve the mystery of why you don’t want to set the date for our wedding too.

A brief niggling of fear passed through her heart. Had Jim changed his mind about getting married?

Trixie slowly walked into the house, deciding tomorrow she wouldn’t take no for an answer. Let him get angry, but she will know what is going on. She prayed that Jim hadn’t changed his mind.

Jim finally gave up the pretense of sleeping about 5:30 am. He had dressed and went down to the stable to give Jupiter a work out.

The horse sensed Jim’s mood and tossed his head in agitation until Jim finally took him out to the open field and let him run off both of their frustrations. Both horse and rider were sweaty when they returned to the stable.

Jim made sure he cleaned Jupe up and let him cool down before returning him to his stall.

Jim entered the kitchen of the Manor House, and heard and smelled the breakfast cooking. He took a mug from the cabinet and filed it with the freshly brewed coffee.

“Jim? I didn’t realize you were up,” Miss Trask said from somewhere behind him.

Jim turned and painted a smile on his face. “Yeah, I was up early and decided to take Jupe on a ride.”

Margery nodded, and said, “Breakfast will be ready soon, your parents are in the dining room. They have to leave soon after breakfast for a business trip.”

Jim took his mug of coffee and ran up the stairs to take a quick shower before joining his family for breakfast.

A round of good mornings erupted at the table when Jim joined Matt, Maddie, and Honey. That was all they had time for before Celia came into the room with the steaming platters of their breakfast.

After everyone had been served, Matt told Honey and Jim about their planned trip and that they would be gone about a week.

Jim hoped he had made the appropriate responses, but he was preoccupied with his own thoughts.

Soon after breakfast, Honey excused herself to change for work and Jim sat at the table enjoying another cup of coffee. His parents had gotten up to make sure everything was packed for their trip.

Soon enough,  all three came back down stairs. Jim caught sight of his sister in her uniform, and the uneasiness returned to churn his breakfast in his stomach.

He, thankfully, was occupied with the goodbyes to his parents. After they got into the limo and left, Honey said she had to go also. Jim silently watched the door shut behind her.

Jim sat back in the chair and rubbed his hands across his face. Sighing he got up out of the chair and gathered his things to go to the school.  He had too many things to do and just couldn’t put it off any longer.

When Jim arrived at the school, he immediately pulled out Laura Anderson’s file and made the call to tell her that she had been hired. He could tell Laura was happy she’d received the job, as she excitedly asked when she could start.

“Monday is soon enough,” he told her.

Regan stuck his head in the door.

“Got a second, Jim?”

“Of course, what’s up?”

“Those horses we bought will get delivered early next week. Is that okay?”

“Yeah, that’s perfect. Thanks for everything, Regan.”

“No problem! Boss!” Regan said with a grin and walked back out the door before Jim could respond.

Jim smiled as he put Laura’s file away again. The rest of Jim’s day was spent getting supplies and furniture ordered. He had a meeting with his cooks, to make sure they had a well supplied kitchen. The list was long but he wanted to be sure they had everything they needed.

The rest of the week had Diana coming to him with an art supply budget and they went through that. They ordered the desks and tables. They ordered the beds for the kids. It was beginning to shape up and look like a school.

Trixie had to work part of the weekend, and he missed seeing her. He tried not to resent the fact that the job was already taking her away from him.

Monday morning dawned a dreary cloudy day. It looked like it could rain at any second. Jim ate his breakfast on the run that day. The horses were being delivered, and his new assistant was starting today. He wanted to be on hand to show her where everything was and start her on the job of filing, reorganizing, and setting up their office space.

Kids were arriving within 6 weeks and they were planning to officially start the classes on September 1st.

His cell phone rang while he walked from the Manor House to the school. He flipped it open and answered.

“Good morning, sweetie,” he said to Trixie.

“Good morning! I am on my way to work, just thought I’d call. I missed you this weekend.”

Jim paused and took a deep breath.

“Yeah, Trix, I missed you too.”

“So can we do something tonight and tomorrow? I have tomorrow off,” Trixie said, hoping he’d say yes.

“I’m sorry, Trixie, I have so much to do right now. The new horses come today and my new assistant is starting. We have a lot to get ready before the kids start arriving.”

Trixie bit her lip and hid her disappointment.

“Ok, Jim, maybe another time.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Jim  ended the call and kept walking to the school.

His day started and never really gave him a break. He was thankful, it didn’t give him time to think about Trixie.

He was on hand to help Regan and the former owner unload the five horses he’d purchased.

Mart and Rob came out to watch.

Dusting his hands off, he closed the gate to the corral and watched the horses run around a bit to let off pent up energy. Regan began filling feed bins and watering troughs.

“They look good. I can’t wait to get into the saddle again. It’s been awhile for me,” Rob said.

“Me too. At least we get out once in awhile. We have been slacking off these days.” Mart chimed in.

“You’re telling me! You kids used to be wonderful about making sure the horses were exercised. I don’t know--we should have sold the horses off when you all went to college,” Regan said.

“Now, Regan, you know how life gets in the way at times. But we are back here and settled and we can help again. And you know you’ll have plenty of help with all of the boys being here,” Mart tried to smooth ruffled feathers.

Regan walked away muttering something under his breath, but they didn’t miss his grin.

It was a somewhat dusty trio that made their way back into the school. Laura had coffee brewed and Jim helped himself and motioned for the guys to do the same.

He sat on the edge of Laura’s desk and listened as she told him of her progress and phone messages. Mart finished one cup of coffee and said he had an appointment with Diana and he’d see them all later.

Rob soon made excuses too, since he had a lunch date with his parents and he needed to shower and get to the city to meet them.

Jim tackled the paperwork that was waiting for him. He was in awe of how much paperwork it took to open the school. He didn’t even have the students here yet.

He heard the phone ring with his office door open, and heard Laura take the call. She buzzed him and told him through the intercom that he had a call from the Sleepyside Sun.

More interviews? The price I have to pay. More publicity for the school, means more support and more donations.

Jim reached for his phone and answered.

“Jim Frayne.”

“Mr. Frayne, this is Sam Masters, from The Sleepyside Sun. I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions.”

“Yes, that would be fine.” Jim sat back more comfortably in his chair.

The Sun wants to know if you have any comments concerning the shooting of Officer Belden today.”

Jim’s blood ran cold. He felt a tightening in his chest and struggled for a breath.

“Did--did you say a shooting?” Jim jumped from his seat.

“Yes, I did. I’m sorry, I thought you would have heard by now. Officer Belden was shot in the line of duty today--

Jim gripped the edge of his desk in a white knuckled grasp. He felt the room spin and he gasped for air.

He couldn’t speak and just slammed the phone down.

Jim took but a second to think. Why hadn’t anyone called him? Where was she? And was she hurt badly? Was she de--? No Frayne, don’t go there.

He ran from the school. Of all days not to have his car!

Laura called after him, asking him if he was okay, but he was gone.

He didn’t take the time to go into the house, he slammed his car door and started the car. Speeding down the driveway, he wondered again why no one called him.

Jim broke a few speeding laws in his efforts to get to the hospital. And he ran into the hospital and was panting as he tried to ask the nurse at the desk where to find Trixie.

“Please, Trixie Belden, where can I find her?”

The nurse looked confused for a moment and then realized the name Belden was familiar.

“Ok, um, I don’t know where she is.”

Jim lost his control. “What do you mean you don’t know? I want to see her right now. Tell me where Trixie Belden is!”

The shouting attracted attention but Jim didn’t care. Several people stopped to stare at the red haired man breathing heavily and shouting.

“Sir, this is a hospital, you will have to leave if you can’t compose yourself,” the nurse said calmly.

“I just need to find her. Tell me where I can find her!”

“Jim?”

Jim spun around to see Trixie standing five feet from him. She wore her uniform yet and he didn’t think of anything else but his relief at seeing her there. In two steps he was in front of her pulling her up into a tight embrace. He buried his face into her neck and held her.

Trixie wrapped her arms around him and waited for him to calm down.

His heart beat was thundering in his chest. Jim didn’t know anything but this great need to hold her, feel her and know she was alive. Finally, he leaned back far enough to look into her face.

“I was so afraid! I got a call-!”

Jim suddenly set her on her feet and searched and felt her body for signs of injury.

“Jim, I’m fine.  It was Hallie who got hurt!”

Jim was visibly relieved and he felt almost weak-kneed at her words.

“Come on, sit down over here.” Trixie led him over to the chairs in the waiting area.

Once sitting, Jim grabbed her hand and held it in a death grip. She didn’t mind. Trixie had never seen him this upset before and it was a little scary.

“Hallie was hurt?” he asked.

“Yes, she was riding with Tad and they stopped a drunk driver and he didn’t take kindly to getting stopped. He pulled a gun, and it was fired in the skirmish.”

“Thank God it was Hallie!” Jim said, then, backtracked when he realized what he’d said. “I mean, that it wasn’t you! I never would have wanted Hallie to be hurt, but at least it wasn’t you. If that made any sense. I’m going to stop babbling now- is she okay?”

Trixie smiled gently at him. She brushed a consoling hand down his cheek and said, “Yes, she’ll be okay. A few stitches should take care of it. It was a graze across her upper arm. And she will be out of here shortly. This time it’s no big deal.”

Jim stared at her long and hard. Trixie’s words were echoing in his head. This time.. This time….This time!

Jim’s grip tightened more than she thought possible, but the stark whiteness of his face worried her. Suddenly he let her hand go and stood up.

“Jim, are you okay?” Trixie stood and placed her hand on his arm.

Jim turned to look down at her. Silently shaking his head. He would have left then, but she had placed her hand on his arm. He looked down at her hand and back up to her eyes.

“I- I can’t do this!” he gasped. His throat felt raw as he pushed the words out.

“What? What are you saying?” Fear gripped Trixie’s heart, leaving her cold.

Jim still shook his head.

“I can’t do this. I can’t watch you get hurt. I can’t love you and know there is a chance you aren’t coming home.”

“But, Jim, I wasn’t hurt.” Trixie felt her heart pounding in her head.

“Not 'this time'. I’m sorry! Goodbye, Trixie.” Jim yanked his arm away from her and started to walk away.

He took three steps and then began to run. He pushed through the door and ran to his car, faintly hearing Trixie calling after him.

Trixie followed him outside and stood on the curb watching him speed away in his car. Feeling close to tears, she jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

“Was that Jim? Where was he going in such a hurry?” a concerned Honey asked.

Seeing her best friend’s concern sent Trixie over the edge and she burst into tears.

Honey  took her friend into her arms and let her cry.

Smoothing the back of Trixie’s curls, she asked quietly, “Are you worried about Hallie? It is really just a flesh wound, nothing to worry about.”

Trixie shook her head against Honey’s shoulder.

“Did Jim say something to upset you?”

Trixie nodded and lifted her tear stained face.

“I, I think th-that Jim, j-just broke u-up wi-with me,” Trixie hiccupped.

Honey brought her hand up to wipe Trixie’s cheeks dry.

“No, I’m sure he didn’t. Jim loves you!”

Trixie shook her head.

“He was so upset. I–I knew something was wrong wi--with him.”

Honey pulled her towards one of the benches located outside of the hospital. Sitting them both down, Honey put an arm around her friend.

“What is wrong with him? He’s seemed fine at home.”

Trixie explained Jim’s strange behavior lately. How distant she felt he was being and his reluctance to set their date for the wedding.

Honey shushed her and told her that it would all be all right.

“I hope so.” Trixie sniffled and then wiped her face again.

“Just give me a minute Honey, then I’ll come back inside.”

Honey nodded and got up with a final pat on Trixie’s shoulder.

Resting her elbows in her lap, Trixie wiped her face dry and took a shuddering breath.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was gone. She looked down at her engagement ring sparkling on her left hand.

Jim, you can’t leave me now! You promised to marry me, you promised!

 Part Three

Trixie composed herself and went back into the hospital. Aside from her red eyes and nose, she looked calm and poised on the outside. Honey looked up at her when she entered the cubicle where they had given Hallie her stitches. With a slight shake of her head, Trixie looked to Hallie.

“Hal, how are you feeling? Do you need anything?”

Hallie looked at her cousin with narrowed eyes. “I’m fine, Trix. I really wish they’d let me go back to the farm already!”

Dan poked his head through the curtain.

“Hey, is this girls only or can a guy join in the fun?”

Hallie’s face lit up when she saw Dan.

“Dan!”

Honey saw the reaction the two had to each other and ushered Trixie out of the room.

“Hallie, are you okay?” Dan took in her appearance. Hallie was a little pale. Her uniform top was off, and she wore a tank underneath. It was once white, but now was splattered with blood. Hallie’s blood.

“Yeah, Dan, no big deal. Just a scrape.”

Dan came towards her and touched his fingertips to her cheek.

“You didn’t have to come, Dan. I’m okay, just waiting to get released to go home.”

Dan stared down at her and just drank in the sight of her.

He lowered his head and claimed her lips with his own. Time stood still for both as they lost themselves in that one kiss.

Dan raised his head and looked down into Hallie’s face. Her eyes were still closed and the corners of her mouth turned up, ever so slowly. Her eyelids fluttered open and she looked into his dark eyes.

“Good thing I’m already laying in this bed! I think that kiss would have made me faint otherwise!”

Dan let out a short laugh, “You faint? Yeah, right! I’ll believe that when I see it!”

His hand caressed her cheek again and he stared into her blackberry colored eyes.

“I’m glad you’re okay. I had to see for myself,” he said softly.

Hallie grasped his hand from her cheek and squeezed it.

“I’m glad you’re here,” she said just as quietly.

They were interrupted by the doctor coming into the room. Hallie was released and Dan stepped out for a moment to let her get her final instructions and get herself redressed.

He found Trixie and Honey in the hall. He let them know Hallie was in the process of getting released, and he told them he’d make sure she got home.

“That sounds good to us, Dan. We wanted to stop by the station to see what happened to the shooter, and let Molinson know about Hallie’s release.” Honey said.

Dan looked curiously at Trixie. She was just standing there quietly, too quietly for her.

Honey put an arm around Trixie’s shoulders and led her from the hospital. Dan shrugged and chalked it up to her being upset over her cousin getting hurt. He went back into Hallie’s room when the doctor came out.

Trixie felt like she was in a fog. She walked beside Honey into the station, and stood by while Molinson asked about Hallie. She heard him tell her and Honey to take the rest of the day off, but it wasn’t registering.

Honey once again led her out to her car and she drove them home. Stopping in the Crabapple Farm driveway, Honey turned to her friend.

“Trixie, I’m sure everything with Jim will work itself out. You know how he is. He blows up then later calms down and he’s fine.”

Trixie looked at Honey and frowned.

“Honey, this is just different. It feels like--I think I lost him.” She looked down at her hands forlornly.

“Trix, you aren’t a quitter. Chin up! I’m sure you two will have this all worked out by dinner time.”

Trixie tried to smile at her friend. Dear, sweet Honey. Always tried to make everyone feel better. She was right about Jim and his temper. Trixie tried to look at that side and convince herself that Jim would call her later to work it all out.

Dinner time came and went and Trixie waited for the phone to ring but nothing came. She was so upset she couldn’t eat.

Dan had accompanied Hallie home and stayed to have dinner with the family.

Peter and Helen had crowded around their niece and made a fuss over her.

That night, Trixie fell asleep on top of her bed, still dressed in her clothes.  It had been late, after midnight, when she’d finally succumbed to sleep. Her dreams were fitful, and she tossed and turned and thought of Jim constantly.

The morning dawned brightly, as if nothing from the day before had happened. Trixie couldn’t handle breakfast yet and decided to take the bull by the horns and call Jim.  Dialing the familiar number, she was slightly surprised that Jim hadn’t called her last night.

Honey answered on the third ring.

“Hi Honey, Jim didn’t call me, but I can’t let this go on any longer. Is he there, can I speak to him?” Trixie was slightly breathless at the end of it.

Honey was silent for a minute. A long minute. Finally, she cleared her throat.

“No, Trixie, he isn’t here.”

“Is he already over at the school? I can call him there, or maybe stop by before work.”

“I don’t know where he is. He didn’t come home last night. I was concerned and called the school first thing this morning, and Rob said they haven’t seen him since yesterday afternoon. And Trix, he isn’t answering his cell.”

Trixie gulped and slowly sat down.

“Where is he Honey? Where did he go?”

“I don’t know, Trix, but I’m sure he’ll call. I bet you he’s in the process of calling right now. Or on his way home.”

Honey’s words sounded more confident than her voice.

Trixie numbly agreed and hung up the phone. She readied for work by habit not conscious thought.

She went straight to Molinson, and requested desk duty with no ‘ride alongs’ today. He frowned and looked down at her with a brow raised. But he granted her wish.

By the end of that night and early the next morning, she became very worried about Jim. No one had heard from him. He hadn’t called the school to let them know he’d be gone. He hadn’t called Miss Trask nor Honey about his plans. They considered calling the police, but Regan felt they should hold off yet. There was no sign of anything suspicious happening.

By the evening of the second day, Jim had phoned Miss Trask and told her he was fine and not to worry. Trixie was past worried about him and heading straight for angry.

Why hasn’t he called me? Doesn’t he know everyone was worried about him? How can he just disappear?

Trixie called in sick on the third day. Her anger and frustrations over the situation with Jim was driving her to distraction.

“Trixie, honey, I know you’re upset because of Jim, but, moping around the house isn’t going to help,” Moms said gently.

Trixie had already tackled the dusting of the entire house. She had done the dished from breakfast and made any beds that were still needing it. She had changed Hallie’s bedding, and started the laundry.

“I have been working, not moping!” Trixie told her mother.

“Is that what they call it these days? Well, I think the duster and mop would be grateful if you took a break. You’ve been a little hard on them today.”

Trixie sighed and put the vacuum back into the closet and set the duster on the shelf. She wandered into the kitchen and stood at the sink looking out into the back yard.

“I’m going for a walk, Moms,” she called over her shoulder as she left the house.

Hallie stood at the same window by the sink.

“Hallie, sit down, you really should be resting, dear,” Helen said to her niece.

“Auntie, I’m fine, really. I will go back to work next week.”

“Don’t remind me!”

Hallie looked up at her aunt with surprise.

“Don’t you approve?”

Helen sighed.

“I don’t approve of you or my daughter being a target for weird men with guns.”

“It’s not my idea of fun either, but I am fine.”

Helen ran her fingers through Hallie’s long hair.

“I’m trying to be objective. It is easier if it didn’t have to do with family.”

Hallie kissed her aunt’s cheek.

“I appreciate your efforts!”

A knock on the door prevented any further conversation.

Dan poked his head into he kitchen and smiled when he saw Hallie.

“Hi, How are you feeling?” he asked.

Hallie rolled her eyes, “Like I’m going to scream if one more person asks me that.”

Dan grin widened.

“Should I duck?”

Hallie cocked her head to one side and smiled.

“Sorry, I’m just so frustrated with the situation. My parents and brothers have called non stop, Auntie and Uncle are hovering, Trixie has deserted me with the situation with Jim, Mart is busy with work, Di and Honey too, and Brian is gone, volunteering at some medical conference thing. When someone does see me, they ask me how I am!”

“Well, then let’s get you out of here!” he winked and held out a hand for her to take.

“Whatever are you going to do with me, Mr. Mangan?” she asked,  placing her hand into his.

“Wait and see, Ms. Belden. Wait and see!”

Meanwhile out in the woods….

Trixie walked along lost in thought. Where is he? Why hasn’t he called me? Your hunch was right; he did break up with you!

Trixie walked further and suddenly she slammed into a wall, a familiar wall. Strong hands came out immediately to steady her. Slowly, she raised her eyes to look into his green ones.

His face was an unreadable mask. He still held her by the forearms and stared down at her.

Finally he spoke, “Are you okay, Trix?”

Trixie still stared, and she chewed on her lip in thought of how to handle this situation.

“I didn’t fall,” she stated the obvious.

Jim let his hands drop to his sides and continued to look down at her. Finally she couldn’t stand the silence any more and asked, “Are you okay, Jim?”

He nodded.

Trixie raised her hand, made a fist and socked him in the shoulder before he had a clue it was coming.

“Ow!! Trixie, why did you hit me?” he asked rubbing the sore spot.

“Why did I hit you? Why did I hit you?!” Trixie repeated starting to raise her voice.

“That‘s what I wanted to know,” he said.

“Jim Frayne, you left me standing at the hospital, after breaking up with me or at least I think that is what you did! But I don’t know because you disappeared and didn’t see fit to call me for three days!” Trixie pushed back from him and started to stalk back to the house.

“Trixie, wait.” Jim reached out and grabbed her by the arm to stop her.

Trixie spun around and looked up at him expectantly. She tossed her curls and even tapped her foot waiting for him to continue. With a huff, she started to leave again, only   Jim pulled her back.

“We need to talk.” Seeing her glare at him, he sighed, “Please, Trix.”

Trixie relented and stood stiffly, still waiting for him to start the conversation.

“Well?” she said.

“You aren’t making this easy for me.”

Her brow rose in surprise, “This was your doing, not mine.” Trixie’s arms crossed across her chest.

Jim saw that she wasn’t going to give an inch and decided he’d better get going on his explanations.

“I’m sorry I left you at the hospital. I shouldn’t have done that.”

He paused; she still waited for him to say more.

“I don’t know what happened. I mean, I know what happened but it just caught me by surprise.”

Trixie looked up, still waiting. Jim cleared his throat.

“When you joined Sleepyside PD, it all crashed in on me. I had this great fear that I’d lose you. You’d get hurt or killed because you’re a police officer.”

Trixie opened her mouth to protest, but he held his hand up to silence her.

“I have known since you were thirteen that you wanted to be in this line of work. But Trix, it became a reality when you wore that uniform.” Jim shook his head at the memory.  “I love you so much and I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you. I couldn’t bear to lose you like, like I lost my parents,” he finished in an anguished whisper and he saw her stance relax.

Jim looked down at her with hope shining through his eyes for the first time that day.

“I was terrified of losing you. I couldn’t live without you. You are my life. You are everything to me. It would kill me if something happened to you. I’ve- I’ve lost too many people in my life, I couldn’t handle having to bury you too.” A lone tear trickled down his cheek.

Trixie closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

Jim still stood in front of her, his shoulders stooped with the weight of his burden. Trixie slowly opened her eyes to look at him again. Tears shimmered in her lashes and she waited for him to finish.

“I left; I had to get away from everyone. I’m sorry I didn’t call you. I’m sorry I didn’t tell anyone where I was. I wanted to block out the thoughts that just kept haunting me. I thought if I got far enough away, then I wouldn’t have to worry anymore or think about you anymore.”

Trixie wiped the tears that slipped down her cheeks.

“Hallie’s shooting sent me into a tail spin. I thought for a few minutes, that it was you. I never want to feel that again, But I can’t send you out of my life either. You’re the air that I breathe and if I can’t have you in my life, then you might as well bury me now.”

Trixie took a shuddering, hiccupping breath. She took two steps to find herself in his crushing embrace,

Jim’s fingers threaded through her hair and he held her so tightly to him that she feared her ribs would be crushed. But she didn’t mind. It had never felt better.

“Please, forgive me! I know I don’t deserve it, but I love you and I want you to love me for the rest of my life.”

Trixie’s hands came up from his shoulders to clasp his face between them. She set her face very close to his, their noses nearly touching.

“I have never stopped loving you! And I never will!” she whispered.

Jim kissed her then. Trixie met his brutal onslaught every step of the way. When they finally parted, they were panting from the effect.

Trixie slowly traced a finger tip around his mouth.

“Jim, you could have talked to me when you started feeling this way. You shut me out. If we get married, we need to be able to talk to each other about these kinds of things.”

“If?” he asked with a frown.

Trixie licked her lips and thought for a moment.

“When,” she amended.

Jim and the world seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. He smiled down at her.

“I know I’m going to still get scared when you are working on a case. I can only hope I get better at dealing with it. Do you think you can be patient with me?” he absently twirled one of her curls around his fingertip.

Trixie smiled back at him and nodded. “I think I can be patient if you can make the effort to try. You know, they do have counseling for this.”

“I know, and I think it might be a good idea.”

Trixie grinned. “So, we’re back together?”

“Were we ever not together?” he asked.

“You definitely had me worried.”

“I’m sorry,” he began but she cut him off.

“Jim, we settled that already. I know you are sorry.”

Trixie took the hand he offered and they began to walk back towards Crabapple Farm.

“Trix, I know it wasn’t fair of me to act that way. I’ve known since you were thirteen  that you were going to be a detective.”

“Jim, it’s okay that you got scared. We all get scared sometimes. But it wasn’t okay that you shut me out. I’m the one who you should have talked to. We have promised to love each other for the rest of our lives. You have to trust me when something like this happens.”

Jim nodded his agreement. “I know, I won’t shut you out ever again, I promise. I’ll be ready to set our wedding date whenever you are.”

“Let’s give ourselves a little bit to settle things, before we worry about setting a date. I want to, and I can’t wait to be your wife, but let’s deal with one thing at a time.”

Jim kissed her hand and they kept walking.

They reached the edge of Crabapple Farm’s yard, and Jim stopped her. Taking both of her hands in his, he looked down at her lovingly.

“Just let me know when you want to get married. I’ll be there. That is if you really want to.” He watched her carefully, and felt the instant relief when she smiled.

“Of course, I want to. I love you, Jim. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

Trixie moved easily into his arms and they kissed.

Inside the farm house, Hallie and Helen Belden stood at the kitchen window watching the young couple.

“Looks like the lost has been found,” Hallie said.

“Thank goodness! Maybe things can get back to normal,” Helen said as she put her arm around her niece’s waist and turned them both around.

“Auntie, normal? You have high expectations for this group!” Hallie grinned.

“Maybe so, but it’s our normal!” Helen winked at her.

“Aunt Helen, can I have Dan over for dinner?” Hallie asked, looking up at her aunt hopefully.

“Dan is like family, he is welcome any time,” Helen assured her.

Helen watched Hallie run to the phone then to call Dan and she let her have privacy. Helen walked into the kitchen to begin the preparations for dinner. She had a couple of extra mouths to feed tonight and there was nothing she liked better.

The End

I got the inspiration to add a Hallie/Dan section to this one about midway through.
