Silver Bells

by Funshine

"Wow,"  breathed the young blonde as she watched a shooting star pass over her head.  The star-dotted sky twinkled and glistened above.  Trixie Belden glanced down at her wristwatch and gasped. It was nearly seven; she had told Honey that she would be there by 6:30.

Trixie hurried up the hill to the Manor House, alias the Wheeler House.  She knocked on the front door twice, and in those seconds before Celia, the pretty young maid who had married Tom Delanoy two years before, Trixie heard the sound of Silver Bells being played in Mr. Wheeler's study.

"Hello, Trixie, how are you?"  Celia asked.

"Hi, Celia, I'm great.  And you?"

"I'm well. Honey is upstairs waiting for you, she said to just come right up."

"Okay, thanks."

Trixie ran upstairs to her friend's room, her blue eyes were reflecting excitement everywhere.

"Trixie, I'm so excited! Brian and Jim will be here soon. Speaking of being here soon, where were you and where is Di?"  Honey, also known as Madeleine, Wheeler, exclaimed.  Honey's honey-brown hair (which is where she got her nickname) was pulled back into a ponytail and her hazel eyes were bright with unexclaimed joy.

Trixie wiped her unruly, blond curls off her forehead and laughed at Honey's obvious exuberance.  "I know Bri and Jim will be here in a couple of minutes and I'm happy for that. I would have been here sooner, but Moms had me making sugar cookies, which I forgot to bring up here. I have no clue where Di is."

As if on cue, Diana Lynch walked into the room; her violet eyes were still bright with the cold from outside.  "Sorry, I'm late. Mother had me help her with the cookies. I just dropped them off with Celia,"  Di breathed.

"That's okay," Honey laughed, "as long as it was for a good cause.  I just love both of your moms' cookies!"

"I know, so do I,"  Trixie said. "I'm glad we still make them, even if you guys are going to have an excess amount of food. It just wouldn't seem like Christmas without Moms' sugar cookies--it's tradition."

The other girls agreed.

"So, Honey, why are we here so early?"  Trixie laughed, glancing at her watch.

"Gleeps!  You're right, Trix. We better hurry; the party's starting in an hour!"  Honey cried.

Trixie went over to Honey's closet where earlier she had stashed the dress she was going to wear.  She pulled hers and also Di's dress out of the closet and laid them on the bed next to Honey's.

Trixie gazed at the three dresses sitting so companionably on the bed; hers was a green dress, Honey's was red, and Di had a bluish purple.  Di grabbed her dress and went to change in Honey's bathroom.  After she was finished,  Trixie went and changed in the bathroom while Honey changed in her room.

The girls listed to some Christmas music while getting ready. got ready.  They did each other's make-up and hair. The hair was the hard part-- well, Trixie's hair was the hard part,

Honey and Di had thought long and hard about how they wanted her hair to be done, and had spent most of the hour working on it.  Finally, it had come out perfect. They had piled her curls up on her head and made it look elegant, yet it still had the Trixie sass to it.  As Trixie looked at herself in the mirror, she was shocked.  Honey and Di had managed to make her look great; which Trixie had thought was impossible.

The girls went quietly into the hall and heard the commotion down below; no doubt there were more guests arriving.  Honey glanced at the wall clock-- it was 8:00, time for them to make an appearance.  They glided down the stairs.  As they entered the room, Di left them to go talk with Mart, whom she had been dating for a month.  Honey had to leave Trixie to herself to go play hostess with Mrs. Wheeler.  Trixie watched mournfully after them.  She glanced about, but there still was no sign of Brian and Jim, nor Moms and Dad.

Trixie decided that Jim was probably upstairs in the shower, which would explain the sound of water they had heard on their way down, and Brian must be at home with her parents and Bobby.

But Dan was there and he walked over to her.

"Hey, Trix."

"Oh, hey, Dan, what's up?"

"Not too much. You looking for Jim?"

Trixie blushed. "Umm, no, I was, uh, looking for Brian."

Dan quirked an eyebrow at this. "Trixie, give me a break. Everyone knows except for maybe Jim and Brian. Because, if Brian knew, he'd probably kill Jim."

Trixie laughed and nodded, but warned Dan that if he told anyone...

Dan rolled his eyes in response to this, but nodded and left to go find Mart.  Trixie was left alone again; she really didn't like these big formal parties.

"Trixie, dear, are you having a good time?"  Mrs.Wheeler asked.

"Oh yes, Mrs. Wheeler, thank you so much for inviting me," Trixie replied.

"Trixie, you know you are welcome anytime, we enjoy having you around so much."

Trixie grinned. "Thanks, Mrs. Wheeler."

Mrs. Wheeler smiled and moved around to play hostess yet again, even though she would have preferred to stay and chat with the exuberant young girl who had brought her daughter and her closer together.

Jim walked into the great big room and looked about.  He was surprised so many people had come in since he had gone upstairs.  He smiled as his eyes roamed the room.  There was Trixie, she looked great. He was surprised that she was standing all alone.

"Hey, Trix," he said, walking up to her.

Trixie smiled. "Jim!"  She threw her arms around him.

"Nice to see you, too,"  he laughed.  He was a  little disappointed that 'his curl' had been pulled back.

Brian, Moms, Dad, and Bobby came into the room.  Trixie had to go give Brian a hug, too; Jim followed her.

"Brian,  I've missed you," Trixie said.

"I've missed you, too, Trixie," Brian said.  After a moment, he went to go give Honey a hug.

Jim pulled Trixie outside; they stared out into the darkness from the porch.  "Trixie, I have a present to give you,"  Jim said hurriedly.

"Really?" Trixie asked.

"Of course."  He handed her a box.

Trixie opened it with the greatest of care.  Inside nestled in red velvet was a locket, inside the locket was a picture of her and Jim on the last day of

vacation they both had a huge smile on their faces.

"Well, Trixie, I know it's still a few months before you turn sixteen, but I just couldn't wait that long. Will you be my girlfriend?"

Trixie was shocked. She would say yes in a heartbeat, but what would her father say?  "Jim, I would love to, but Dad--"

"I asked him all ready,"  Jim interrupted.

"Then, yes, of course!"  Trixie exclaimed.

Jim smiled and put the necklace around her neck.  The two went inside where there was dancing going on; they started to dance to Silver Bells.

 "Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day"

"You know, Jim, I've liked you since the day I met you."

"I've liked you since then, too,"  Jim answered, keeping time to the music.

"Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day"

They had to stop a moment so Trixie could fix her show, which was slipping off. They didn't notice that they were right under the mistletoe until Dan walked by with a girl on his arm and said, "Look up, Frayne."  Jim looked up and then back down to Trixie who was smiling. They kissed and pulled apart.  Jim continued to dance.

"City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear"

"Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day"

"Strings of streetlights, even stoplights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
This is Santa's big scene
And above all this bustle you'll hear"

The adults watched the new couple dance lightly around the room, seemingly not noticing anyone else.

Honey watched her best friend and brother dance around the house, she had know what would happen tonight and she was so happy.  Brian, although happy for his sister, had threatened to end his best friend's life, if he hurt his sister.  Mart, gladly welcomed Jim into his sister's love life, even though it was disturbing to think of Trixie having a love life.  Di was happy for her two friends and wished them well.  Dan was happy they had finally admitted their true feelings for each other.  He never told anyone, but he had, had  a crush on Trixie, when he first joined the club, and there still was a little bit of that feeling in there, yet, he was still happy that they were happy.  If Jim ever hurt her, Brian would have to take what was left of Jim, because Dan would kill him.

The two who were involved in all these thoughts were blissfully unaware of them and were caught up in their own realm which they themselves had created.

"Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day"

Just as the song ended the clock struck midnight, and it was Christmas Day.  The two walked off the dance floor and joined their friends in hugs and kisses, just then there was a patter on the roof and the seven Bob-Whites went to the porch and looked up, there, flying away from them, looked like a man and eight tiny reindeer.  They looked at each other; could it be?  They didn't know but went back to the dance.

"Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day."
