Merry Christmas, Young Man

By Country Girl

Trixie Belden stared in annoyance at her youngest brother as he kept asking for an early Christmas present.

“Bobby, would you please give up! I’m trying to listen to ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’ but I can’t hear LeAnn sing it over your begging for a gift.”

“Now, Trixie,” her mother soothed, “I seem to remember all of you children begging for early gifts at one time or another.”

“But, Moms,” Trixie began.

“Now, now, Trixie, I’ll not have your complaints on this subject. If anything, I need your help fixing the dinner for tonight. I still have to thaw that turkey out. What with all the Bob-Whites coming along with their families, I need some type of help today.”

Trixie walked after her mother towards the kitchen, but carefully avoided her parents kissing under the mistletoe. Once inside the kitchen, she waited for her mother.

A little later, as the dinner preparations were just about done, mother and daughter heard Mart, Brian, Bobby, and Mr. Belden watching The Muppets Christmas Carol, a family tradition started long ago by Mr. Belden when he bought the video tape for Christmas one year. They could also hear Bobby laughing when Rizzo the Rat caught his tail on fire. Eventually, the dinner was ready, the movie over, and the anticipation of the guests’ arrival mounted. Finally, the guests began to trickle in.  Suddenly, everyone was there and dinner began.

“Mind if I sit here, Trix?” Jim asked laughing.

“No, not at all.”

“So do you think you’ve gotten what you wanted for Christmas?”

“Almost.  There are still some things only certain people can give.”

Jim was about to ask what when Mr. Belden began entertaining by carving the turkey.

The rest of the meal flew by.  Later, the Bob-Whites wandered into the living room to exchange gifts. Trixie had drawn Honey’s name and bought her a horse charm bracelet. Honey had drawn Mart’s name and bought him a book full of large words and their definitions. Mart was Dan’s “secret Santa,” and bought him some books to help him prepare for college. Dan gave Jim a book on animals, while Jim gave Di a gift card for a little dress shop in New York City. Di had drawn Brian’s name and bought him several phone cards, telling him that when he went to college, he had to call the Bob-Whites. Brian had drawn Trixie’s name and bought her several Lucy Radcliff books.

After the gift exchange, the Lynches left, saying that Santa would be waiting. Dan left to patrol the game preserve one last time before bed. The Wheelers left as Bobby was falling asleep watching The Grinch, and Mr. Belden carried him up to bed. The remaining Beldens went to bed also, but before Trixie fell asleep, she heard something hitting her bedroom window. She quietly got up, put on her robe, and went to see what it was. What she saw surprised her: Jim was throwing rocks at her window! Trixie slipped her sneakers on and opened her bedroom window, climbed out onto the roof and down the tree that was next to the house.

“Jim, what are you doing?”

“I don’t know what made me come and throw rocks at your window,” he replied sheepishly.

“Well then,” Trixie replied awkwardly, “I guess I’ll say good-night.”

Just as she started back up the tree, Jim tugged on her robe.

“Wait, I want to ask you. . .” Jim paused and took a deep breath. “To be my girlfriend.”

“REALLY?!?!?!”

“Trixie, don’t wake your father!” Jim hissed.

“Jim,” Trixie answered hesitantly, “if you’re sure you want me to be your girlfriend, then I’ll admit that I’d love to be.”

“Trix, you just gave me the greatest Christmas present of all.”

And there on that snowy Christmas Eve, without any mistletoe, Jim and Trixie shared their first kiss.
