It's Not Easy Being Trixie

by Treanna

Trixie opened her eyes and looked around the office that she shared with Honey. She rubbed the back of her head, surprised by the sudden onset of a headache. When the door opened she looked up. Honey walked in with a frown on her face.

“What’s up, partner?” she asked.

Honey shook her head. “We have a...um...gentleman outside that wishes to see us. His nephew has been kidnapped and he needs our help.”

“Then bring him in.”

“But he is a little...um...strange.”

“We have dealt with some strange customers over the years so this one can’t be any different.”

Honey smiled as she walked towards the door. “Wanna bet?” She opened the door and put out her head. “Come in. Trixie can see you now.”

Trixie sat at her desk, the headache still apparent. She looked up and was glad she was sitting  down. Walking past Honey was a frog.

He walked on his two feet, or flippers or whatever, and was about three feet tall. He was shockingly naked except for a frill of green around his neck. And his mouth went from one side of his face to the other. He carried a briefcase in his hand and she watched as he hopped up onto the chair in front of her and put his tiny briefcase on the desk.

“Good morning, Miss Belden.”

“Good mmm...morning Mr...”

“Frog.” He smiled. “But please call me Kermit.” He crossed his thin green legs and smiled at her. “I was told that you were the best detectives in New York, so I came to see you to see if you could help me get back my nephew.”

“Mr., er, Kermit, why don’t you start at the beginning.”

She picked up a notepad and pen and looked up to see a glint in Honeys eyes. She chose to ignore it.

“My nephew and I were working when he went to go to the little frogs' room. When he did not return some time later, I went to find him and found this instead.”

She watched in fascination as his little webby finger opened up the briefcase and pulled out a piece of paper. He handed it to her and she took it and studied it.

Me have froggy
Want two hundred cookies
Or froggy goes bye-bye.

“Cookies?” Trixie frowned, wondering if that was a new way of asking for thousands of dollars. She gave up for a moment and then looked at Kermit. “Do you have any suspicions on who it might be?”

“We have been around a lot of bad people over the years, so I am unsure.”

“Well, give me some names and we can check them out.”

“Well there is Tant Amenella. Her name is actually Tamenella but her spell made Malora say everything Wackbards. She was a werrible twitch that one.”

“What?”

“And then there is Sweetums, but he’s not that bad once you get to know him.

And then there is Miss B, but I haven’t heard much from her since she tried to take over the theatre and I became like “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but Jimmy wasn’t in it.

And then there is Long John Silver, but the last time I heard from him he was still on the island. And then Scrooge, but wait, he’s now a nice guy. And Doc Hopper hasn’t tried to get my legs since Animal became large and scared them all away.”

He looked at the ‘stunned mullet’ expression on Trixie’s face.

“So, you have all that down, Miss Belden?”

“Trixie,” she told him, trying to understand why this morning she had been happy, simply by being one of the best detectives in New York.

“I also received another note.” Again with the little webby fingers in the little briefcase.

Meet me at four o’clock at the theatre and bring
cookies or froggy won’t be green anymore.

“What theatre?”

“Our theatre of course.” Kermit grinned.

Trixie looked at her watch. “It is three-thirty already. How far away is the theatre?”

“Oh just a hop, hop and a few jumps.”

“Then we should go and get ready. Do you have the two hundred cookies?”

“They are being delivered as we speak. Let's go.”

Trixie and Honey followed the small green frog out of their office.

“I hope our families don’t hear about this one.” Honey grimaced.

Following the frog wasn’t the easiest thing either of them had to do. But by skipping along they found that they could keep up with him.

As they neared the theatre they slowed down.

“We will go in the back way,” he whispered to them and they again had to hurry to follow him.

They crept into the back entrance. It was dark inside but for a little light above their heads. As they walked towards the front of the theatre, lights suddenly came on and it seemed to Trixie that a hundred voices yelled out. “SURPRISE!”

Trixie looked around at faces she knew so well, but--

Brian smiled at her, his long curved nose on his head making him look somewhat unreal. Mart was dressed as a huge eagle. Bobby was dressed in green and kept saying RIBBIT.

Her parents were dressed like old balding men and Di was dressed like a scruffy animally type of figure. Dan was dressed like a brown dog with huge ears and when she turned Honey had put on a fluffy bear costume.

But the one that shocked her the most was Jim. His normal red hair had been dyed green and his clothes were also green. Kermit stood beside him smiling as he handed her a pig nose and ears.

“I don’t understand,” she told everyone, noticing that many more Muppets appeared each standing next to the Bob-White that was dressed as them.

“Happy sixteenth birthday, Trix,” Jim told her as he smiled at her confusion. "We wanted to surprise you. And I wanted everyone to be around when we share our first kiss.”

“What?”

She again rubbed her head, the headache becoming more prominent.

She looked again at the people and things around her.

“It all seems like a dream,” she told everyone.

“Then maybe it is,” Kermit told her and as she looked at him he seemed to fade away.

“I don’t understand.”

“Happy birthday, Trixie. I hope your first kiss is everything you wanted.”

Everything became black.

“Trixie, Trixie, Trixie.”

She opened her eyes to see her mother looking down at her. She saw her worried face turn to relief when she saw that she was awake.

“Honey, we were so worried about you.”

“Where is your bald head?”

“What?”

“And Brian’s nose and Jim’s green hair.”

“She must have hit her head harder than we thought,” Moms told the others. “Maybe we need to take her to the hospital.”

Trixie sat herself up and shook her head. “It must have been a dream.”

“What was?” Moms asked.

“Honey and I had our own detective business when Kermit the Frog came in and told us that his nephew Robin had been kidnapped.”

She looked at the incredulous faces around her.

“What else happened, Trix?” Honey asked.

There was two ransom notes. The first was asking for cookies and the second told Kermit where to go. When we got to the Muppet theatre it was dark but suddenly the lights went on and it was a surprise party for my sixteenth birthday. But you were all dressed up to look like Muppets. Brian was dressed up as Gonzo, Mart as Sam the Eagle, Di as Animal, Dan like Rowlf, and you and dad were dressed up as the two old guys, and Bobby was dressed like Robin. Then Honey put on a bear costume like Fozzie and Kermit gave me a pig nose and ears.

“What about me?” Jim smiled.

“You had dyed your hair green and were wearing green clothes. Then all the Muppets you were dressed as appeared and you said that you wanted me to have a surprise party and wanted everyone to be present when we shared our first...” she gasped as she put her hand to her mouth realizing what she had almost said.

Moms looked at Jim and then down at Trixie.

“How about we get the dessert ready now that we know that she is okay.”

And one by one they left the room. Except for Jim.

“Do you remember what happened before you hit your head?”

“It is a little fuzzy, but I think we were watching a tribute to Jim Henson on the television. I jumped up to get a drink and I don’t remember.

“You tripped on the carpet and, in trying to stop yourself falling, you hit the back of your head on the coffee table.”

“No wonder my head has been hurting.”

“Do you need anything for your headache?”

She shook her head. “It is not too bad.”

“Good,"  he told her as he walked over and sat beside her. “Trix, what you said before.”

“It was nothing.”

He sighed. “I was actually hoping that you were talking about...” He then stopped and Trixie saw something pass across his face.

“What, Jim?”

She reached over and took his hand. He curled his around hers like a glove.

He then looked deep into her eyes and before she could utter another word he had reached over and kissed her gently. He then moved back quickly.

“Sorry, Trix, I shouldn’t have done that.”

Trixie remembered how he looked with his green hair and she smiled as she moved closer and kissed him the way she wanted to be kissed.

When she moved away, she smiled.

Thanks Kermit, she thought. It was everything I wanted and more.

And then all thoughts became mush as Jim, grinning touched his hand to her face.

“Happy Birthday, Trixie.”

And then moving closer, he kissed her again.
