The Plan
by AutumnT
After her outburst seven months ago at her boyfriend, Jim Frayne, he and Trixie had not spoken.
Seven months! Trixie thought as she continued to pack her suitcase. She had spent her summer, starting in June, with some college friends until school began in September, when she decided to have a double major in biochemistry and criminology. I hope Moms isn’t mad at me, she thought again.
She knew her mother had been heartbroken that Trixie had not come home for Thanksgiving. She’d made the excuse of too much homework but promised to come home for Christmas. Hence, the packing at hand. ‘We’re over!’ she had yelled at him, last time they had spoken. Jim had turned and stormed off towards Manor House. She had been so furious.
How dare he! she thought, Telling me to grow up! I am grown up!
Trixie sat down at her computer crying, the packing forgotten for now. She had avoided all calls from her friends and family, only occasionally checking her e-mail. “I’m sure Jim told everyone what a baby I acted like,” she muttered. She felt awful about not calling anyone but she refused to.
I am a baby!’she now realized, Jim is right! How could I be so dumb? Jim was worried about her well being, with her thoughtlessly diving into a mystery and then not thinking of the danger that lay ahead. And, instead of listening, she turned her back on him! She scrolled through her e-mail, looking for the unopened e-mail she had received from Jim a few months earlier. She clicked on it and read the short note.
I know that you hate me right now, but I will always love you. When you are ready to talk, let me know. I will be here for you into eternity. Forever Yours, Jim.
Trixie didn’t reply. She had grabbed her suitcase and purse and flew out the door. As she drove, an idea began to form. She immediately called Honey on her cell phone.
Honey’s cell phone rang around midnight, awakening her. She mumbled ‘hello’ but sat straight up, hearing her best friend’s voice. “Trixie!” she exclaimed. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Trixie assured her, “but I need your help.”
“What’s up?” Honey asked, ready for anything.
The next day, Trixie awoke in her bed at Crabapple Farm. She smiled, realizing that her plan would take effect that very night. Her older brothers, Brian and Mart, had been seduced for the day by their girlfriends as part of the plan. They were supposed to meet the others at a place called Joe’s that evening. The trick was getting Jim to go. Dan promised he’d get Jim to go no matter what. A knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.
“Come in!” she called and in bounded her fifteen-year-old brother Bobby.
She hugged him and he asked, “What can I do to help?”
“Your job, dear brother, is to keep Jim occupied today. I have to go into town and get a dress and everything.”
Bobby’s jaw hit the ground and she laughed, pushing him out of the room. She then went to take a shower and dressed before going back into town.
What if he doesn’t like whatever I wear? she thought worriedly. Then she saw it. A white, backless dress cut slightly below the knee that fit her perfectly. Before she went home, Trixie went to the salon to get her hair makeup and nails done. Then, she went home and showed Moms the dress.
“Oh Trixie,” her mother gushed, “it’s perfect.”
Trixie got dressed and sighed, “I hope he forgives me.”
Moms hugged her. “He will. Be brave.”
Trixie nodded and grabbed her purse before heading to Joe’s.
Meanwhile…
At Manor House, the doorbell rang. Marge Trask answered the door and led a well-dressed Dan Mangan through the door. As it closed, Honey greeted Dan and asked,” Is it all set?”
Dan nodded just before Jim walked into the room. Dan asked, “You two ready?” Honey nodded and Dan asked her, “Has Trixie called?”
Trying not to smile, Honey replied, “Yep, she’ll be home when we get back.”
Dan nodded. “Good. Let’s go.” Soon after, they pulled out of the driveway.
Trixie was in the back pacing when someone knocked on the door.
Trixie opened the door and screamed, “Honey!” She hugged her best friend laughing happily. Suddenly, Trixie’s face sobered. “What if I’m wrong? What if he hates me for doing this?”
Honey suddenly crossed her arms, looking very angry. “Trixie Belden!” she exclaimed. “You surprise me! How can you not do it?”
Trixie nodded and fiercely hugged her friend, thanking her, before sending her back to the other Bob-Whites.
A few minutes later, the karaoke began. The first man sang horribly. Jim’s head was pounding by the time he finally finished. He stood up intending to go sit outside for awhile but suddenly felt like someone was watching him. As he turned, he saw the angel in his dreams walking onto the stage in a beautiful dress. Jim silently dropped back into the chair as Trixie began to speak.
Trixie, suddenly terrified, walked up to the microphone and said, “There’s someone here tonight that I love more than life itself. I’ve really messed up his life and I want to dedicate this song to him.”
Jim’s heart skipped a beat as Trixie began singing Collapsed by Aly and A.J.
When she finished the song, she saw Jim walking towards her. He walked onstage and pulled Trixie to him, kissing her longingly. Pulling away, he reddened slightly, noting all of the people watching. Seeing Trixie’s face, he dried her tears and kissed her again. They went back to their group of friends unable to stop smiling. Jim pulled Trixie onto the dance floor. He looked down at the woman of his dreams and kissed her with a question. Trixie deepened the kiss, feeling for the first time in several months, that she was home.
