The ‘fasten your seatbelts’ sign flashed on as the plane descended into JFK National Airport, in New York. Trixie Belden, now an FBI agent, was headed to Sleepyside for some much needed vacation time. She had set this vacation up months ago at her boss’ insistence. Now, since she had been receiving anonymous, threatening letters, she decided that it was high time to relax. Moms had been thrilled, as had her brothers and the other BWG’s, when they found out that she would be coming home.
She had spoken to her niece and nephews several times on the phone over the last few days and their obvious excitement, raised her spirits. Brian and Honey’s two children, MaKenzie and Braden, along with Mart and Diana’s twin boys, Patrick and Michael, had begged her to bring surprises. The only thing she was dreading, was seeing Jim Frayne again. She hadn’t seen him in years, since before she had graduated college, and was unsure of what would happen. Her nieces and nephews had visited her several times in Florida. Once, they had all went to Disneyland and had a blast! Even Dan and Hallie had been able to make it. Jim had told Honey to send his apologies, but Trixie felt the brush off. He could’ve at least called and told her himself. Didn’t she at least deserve that? That was fine. Trixie would keep the letters between herself and Honey.
Brushing away the tears forming in her eyes, Trixie stood and walked off the airplane. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she saw a big group of people waiting for her. She was very surprised, seeing as it was a Friday and they usually all had to work. She looked down at her jeans and oversized t-shirt, hiding her gun. Oh well, she thought, I’ve never been put together anyway.
“Aunt Trixie!” MaKenzie screeched, leaping on her aunt, causing her to fall over. The group laughed as Braden, Michael, and Patrick quickly piled on top.
“Get off! I can’t breathe!” Trixie laughed, tickling her nephews and niece. Finally, she declared herself champion and stood to hug her best friend. “I missed you so much!” she exclaimed before moving to Hallie. “Whoa girl, you are way pregnant! Are we going to have another set of twins on our hands?”
Hallie laughed and shook her head, “Of course not! You know I am due any day.”
Trixie turned to Dan, her face contorted in fake anger, “Dan Mangan, why is she here? Help her sit down!”
Dan obeyed before pulling Trixie into a tight hug. “I’ve missed you, Freckles.”
Diana snuck up behind Trixie and tried to ‘goose’ her, but her hand hit the gun. Diana looked at her sister in law in shock, before angrily asking, “Why are you packing? Are you working on a case?” The group looked at Trixie, concerned.
Trixie trained her eyes on the wall and pulled out the gun and shoved it in her carry on. “No, I’m fine.” she stated firmly, leaving no room for discussion. Then, turning to Mart, she said, “Hello my dear twin, how’ve you been?”
Mart greeted her with a warm hug. “Hey sis, long time, no see.” In a whisper, he asked, “What gives?” Trixie kissed his cheek, giving him a look that said ‘later.’
She then moved to Brian. “I thought you all had to work!” she exclaimed cheerfully. “Oh and let me guess,” she added sarcastically, “Jim gave the rest of you the day off so he didn’t have to come. Am I right?”
“Actually,” a voice from behind said, “I just went to the bathroom.”
Trixie turned, blushing furiously and meekly said, “Nice to see you, Jim.” She shook his hand before quickly going to get her bags and heading out the door. The group followed her, Brian and Jim lagging behind in a heated discussion. A moment later, Brian stepped forward and suggested that Trixie ride with Jim because of the cramped conditions of everyone else’s car. She hung her head, knowing her fate was sealed. She’d have to ride to Sleepyside with Jim Frayne.
Jim led her to his jeep and tossed her bags into the back. He went around to open the door for her but she was already inside. Jim went around to the driver’s side and started the jeep.
“So, how’ve you been?” he asked her nonchalantly.
“Fine,” Trixie replied quietly, staring out the window.
“Those kids have been so excited to see what you’ve brought them. Even Braden, and he’s the quiet one!”
“They’ll find out soon enough.” her voice grew distant and she fell silent. Jim stayed quiet, allowing Trixie time to think.
Finally, he couldn’t take the silence anymore. “Why’d you carry your gun on the plane? What are you up to?”
Trixie turned and glared at him. “I wouldn’t tell you if you were the last person on earth. Not after…oh, never mind.” She turned away and continued looking out the window. As they pulled into the drive at Crabapple Farm, Trixie said, “Thanks for the ride. I’m sorry you got stuck with me. It won’t happen again.”
Jim stood, shocked for a moment, before calling out, “Shamus! Please don’t be like that.”
Trixie turned and stiffly walked back towards where he stood and quietly asked, “How should I be? Huh, Jim? You said you couldn’t handle me and that I was too much. I left so that you could have your space. I only came back to follow orders. I’ll be gone in a few weeks. Until then, I refuse to argue with you.” With that, Trixie picked her bags back up and walked inside the house, leaving him in stunned silence. Inside, she wordlessly hugged her mother and took her bags upstairs. Bobby was still at school until next week, just in time for Trixie’s birthday.
Outside, everyone arrived just then and Brian noticed the stunned expression on Jim’s face and went over to him. “Hey, what happened? Did she yell at you?”
Jim shook his head, “That’s the problem, she didn’t yell once! I wish she would’ve though. It would’ve made me feel better.”
Brian clapped him on her back. “She’s built up a wall. It will take time to break it down. Keep trying. You know you messed up.”
Jim shook his head. “Maybe I shouldn’t stay for dinner,” he said uncertainly.
“Oh no you don’t.” Honey said from behind him, “You’re staying right here. If you object, I’ll make you spend the night!” This caused Jim to smile as the other Bob-Whites laughed.
“What’s Grandma making for dinner?” Patrick and Michael asked in unison.
Mart shook his head and Diana exclaimed, “They are just like their father.”
The group filed into Crabapple Farm and found Moms resting in a chair in the family room.
“Where’s my federal agent of a sister?” Brian asked, hugging his mother.
“She’s making dinner,” came the reply. “She came downstairs and told me that I work too much! Imagine, an F.B.I. agent telling me to relax!”
The group laughed and Brian went and found his sister, who seemed to be looking for something. “Where is it?” she muttered to herself. “Ah hah!” she exclaimed, looking up. She pushed herself up onto the counter top and grabbed the colander from the top of the cabinets. She then turned and jumped form where she stood, landing on the floor.
Brian smiled at his sister. “I see you’ve done that before.”
Trixie nodded and turned to the food on the stove.
“Whatcha making?” he asked, walking towards her.
“Chili,” she replied not looking up.
Brian sat on a nearby chair and asked, “What’s going through that thick head of yours? Is everything okay?”
Trixie looked at her concerned brother and sighed. “I keep getting these threatening letters in the mail. I’ve gotten five in the past two weeks. Basically, they say that someone’s coming to get me and my lover boy won’t save me now.”
Brian shook his head and asked, “Do you have any leads?”
Trixie bit her lip and replied, “The only person I’ve ever been serious with is Jim. I have a team working as we speak to see if anyone that I have put in jail has been released. I’m really worried about one in particular…” she trailed off.
“Jonesy,” Brian finished.
Trixie nodded.
“Please don’t tell Dan, Jim or Hallie. I don’t want Hallie to go into labor any sooner than necessary and Dan would tell her. Jim doesn’t need to be bothered with this. Promise me Brian.” She looked him straight in the eye.
Brian sighed but nodded. “I don’t like this one bit. What if something happens…?”
“It probably won’t,” she interrupted, “They haven’t called me yet and that’s a good thing. Now let me get back to dinner before I burn it.” Brian hugged Trixie again and went to set the table.
Dinner was chaotic. Peter Belden arrived home to a full house. He dropped his brief case as his only daughter leapt into his arms. “Hi, princess!” he exclaimed, kissing her cheek.
“Hi Daddy! I made dinner!”
Peter laughed, “Helen, she’s not been here a whole day and you’ve already put her to work!”
Helen shook her head, “She refused to let me help!”
Everyone gathered around the table and Mr. Belden said the blessing. As they ate, everyone talked about upcoming events including Trixie’s birthday.
“What do you want for your birthday?” Honey asked.
Trixie shared a secret look with Brian before saying, “Nothing really. I’m here with my family and friends. That’s all I wanted.”
The mood was light and moms brought out two dishes of apple crisp. Mart and his twins jumped up excitedly as Peter suggested that everyone eat dessert in the family room. A few minutes later, Trixie’s cell phone rang.
“Detective Belden,” she answered. “Do you have any news?...Well, spit it out... What?!...Yeah, I was just hoping it wasn’t true...No, there’s nothing you can do about it. I will let you know what the plan of action will be...I’ll be fine. Thank you for the information. Hopefully I won’t need it. Bye.”
Trixie pasted a smile on her face and turned to the group. “Sorry guys, just a friend helping me wrap up a case.”
Brian immediately stood and asked, “You wanna go work out? The gym’s open for another two hours.”
Trixie smiled gratefully. “Let me change. Honey, is it okay with you?”
Seeing her pleading eyes, Honey smiled and said, “It’s totally fine. We’ll catch up later. Di, why don’t we let the boys go with her?”
Diana nodded and pushed Mart towards the door. “Have fun, sweetie.”
In the van, Trixie filled Mart in on her earlier conversation with Brian. She told them about the call from her partner. “Jonesy escaped from jail a week before I started getting letters. They, of course, are typed and heave no fingerprints on them but my own. He hasn’t been seen anywhere. All I can hope is that he doesn’t know I’m here.”
“Are we going to tell the Bob-Whites?” Mart asked.
“No.” she explained her theory but Mart shook his head,
“I still don’t get it. Jim would understand. Jim would understand better than anyone. He’d probably be a big help.” Mart stopped, seeing his sister’s tears.
“Don’t you get it?” she cried. “He’s made it crystal clear that he wants nothing to do with me or mysteries. I’m not going to bother him with this. Guys, promise me you won’t tell him unless completely necessary.”
Brian looked up sharply, almost running the van off the road. “Do you think that it’s a possibility?” he asked, concerned.
“Yes, and I am being honest so promise.”
Her brothers nodded and were silent until they reached the parking lot of the gym. Inside, Mart held the punching bag for her while she punched. She hit the bag so hard that Brian had to help hold it. When she finished, she turned and did a cartwheel. The boys stared at her.
“Hey Trix,” Mart called, “No twenty seven-year-old should be able to do that!”
“Why do you think I don’t want to be twenty eight? I already know that my fate as a cat lady is sealed.”
The boys started laughing and wouldn’t stop so Trixie dragged them out the door. “Why don’t I drive?” she asked a hysterical Brian. He tossed her the keys and climbed into the passenger seat. Trixie dropped Mart off first and he bade her goodnight with a peck on her cheek. Brian and Honey lived at Manor House so Brian dropped Trixie off first.
“Goodnight Cat Lady,” he chuckled, pulling out of the driveway before she could attack him. She skipped into the house, not noticing Jim’s car, still in the driveway. She walked into the living room and saw Jim asleep in a chair in the corner.
She wrung her hands. What do I do?’Her parents had gone to bed. Quietly, she slipped upstairs and took a shower. After slipping on a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt, she went downstairs, hoping that he’d left. All hope was lost for he was still asleep in the chair. She touched his shoulder and lightly shook him. He awoke with a start and jumped out of the chair, scaring Trixie.
“You about gave me a heart attack!” he yelled.
“SHH!” Trixie hissed. “What are you still doing here?”
Jim held up a hand. “I just wanted to apologize for how I acted all those years ago. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. I shouldn’t have done what I did. I was really scared…I didn’t want someone to come tell me that you were dead. Your line of work gets you into some tight spots. I was afraid your luck would run out and I would get a phone call...”
“Jim, I’ve been trained. I’m not a little kid any more. I accept your apology, although, I’m not sure where that leaves me standing.” Jim hugged Trixie for the first time in years.
“Thank you, Shamus. Did you have fun with your brothers?” he asked.
“Yeah, I think I scared him a little bit.”
Jim laughed,.“That must’ve been a sight.”
Trixie flashed a brilliant smile and reddened. “Mart said no one my age should do things that I can.”
“Well, what was your comeback?” Jim asked.
Trixie turned a darker shade of red and answered, ”I told him that I was resigned to my fate as a cat lady.”
Jim laughed, seeing her watching him but groaned inwardly. He’d never thought about that possibility.
“Since we’ve resolved our problems, would you like to visit the school sometime?”
Trixie’s whole face brightened. “That’d be great! I’m going to spend tomorrow with Honey, Diana and the little monsters. I need to give them their gifts. You could come for lunch if you want and then, Monday I’ll visit your school.”
Jim beamed, “Great! I can’t wait to show you what I’ve accomplished. Regan will be so happy to see you. And we have to go riding.”
Trixie grinned and waited for her to stop. “You done now? I think you better go. I don’t want my parents to wake up.”
Jim noticed her nervousness and agreed, “See you tomorrow. Goodnight Shamus.” He kissed Trixie’s cheek and watched as she quickly turned and fled upstairs without another word. Jim cursed himself for moving too fast. ‘She just forgave you and you’re trying to pull something. Smooth Frayne. Real smooth.’ He got into his car and drove home.
Honey called Trixie around 9:30 this morning. Trixie agreed since Diana was already there. When she arrived, Honey immediately began interrogating Trixie about the letters and everything that had happened. Since Brian and Mart had already told their wives everything, there wasn’t anything to tell. Diana voiced her concern for Trixie’s safety and brought Jim into the conversation. Trixie made it clear to her friends that she didn’t want him to know but she did tell them about his apology. Honey’s eyes sparkled, “So you may not be a cat lady after all.” She and Diana began to giggle.
“You two better stop,” Trixie threatened wickedly, “Or I’ll tell Brian and Mart about the skinny dipping with Dan.”
Both girls’ mouths fell to the ground. “You wouldn’t! We’d tell on you! You were there.”
Trixie grinned and shook her head, “Who are you gonna tell? No one cares that I did it. But you two were dating my brothers.” They looked to the ground and Trixie changed the subject. “Oh by the way, I invited Jim to lunch with the monsters today.” Diana and Honey grinned and Trixie’s face grew solemn. “Guys, am I really unlovable?”
She burst into tears and Honey asked, “Trixie, what is this about?” “I…I you and Di got fairy tale endings. Dan is happy and Jim has the school. And me,” sniff “I’m the crazy F.B.I. agent that is always in trouble and pushes everyone away!” The girls comforted her assuring her that it wasn’t true. About five minutes after she calmed completely down, Brian. Mart and Jim came in with the kids, who threw themselves at their aunt.
“Boys are so gross!” MaKenzie told Trixie. “Uncle Mart got all of them doing burping in a contest. Even daddy!” Trixie smiled and raised an eyebrow at the boys. No one noticed her red faced or bloodshot eyes until the kids went to help Diana with lunch.
“They were wound for sound,” Brian said, kissing his wife.
Trixie grimaced before standing and heading for the kitchen.
“Dang Trix,” Mart said as she passed him, “you look like crap.”
Her eyes flitted across the room and said, “I know. Thanks for the recap Mart. Hon, would you mind if I gave the kids their gifts now? I’m going to try to get some chores done before going shopping with Hallie.” Honey nodded and Trixie retrieved the gifts from the hallway. The children came running in and Trixie passed out the gifts. MaKenzie squealed in delight at her tea set. Braden got a set of miniature zoo animals which he quickly took out of the box to play with. Patrick and Michael ripped their gifts open to reveal to sets of equipment. Michael got a firefighter set and Patrick got the police equipment.
“Alright!” they yelled simultaneously.
“Come here aunt Trixie!” Patrick exclaimed, “I’m gonna ‘rest you.”
“Oh no.” she said, backing away. “I’ve already been there, done that. I do not need to go there again.” The adults laughed, when suddenly, Trixie bolted out the door barely saying goodbye to the group. Trixie hurried home and took another shower before dressing in jeans and a pretty pink shirt. She called Hallie and arranged to meet her a few minutes later at her and Dan’s house. Trixie ran the short distance to their cottage and was surprised to find Dan at home.
“I thought you had to work today!” she said, hugging him.
“Easy, detective, I took off half a day. I’ll take you two into town and pick you up.” Trixie grinned her thanks as she hugged Hallie.
In town, the girls talked. Trixie told her cousin about the Jim situation and Hallie shook her head. “I don’t get you two. You should’ve married each other years ago. Don’t give me that crap about liking to be alone. You are my cousin.” Trixie smiled and told her about the cat lady remark. Hallie had to sit down, she was laughing so hard.
Trixie’s phone rang as Hallie was in the check out line. “Belden here.” she answered. Suddenly her face paled and quietly said, “Leave everyone out of this.” She then hung up and called Dan to come pick them up.
Then she called Honey. “Oh Honey! Thank God!” she whispered, “Jonesy just called my cell phone!”
“What!” Honey screeched, “What did he say?”
“That he was waiting for me. I told him to leave everybody alone. Hon, remember your promise.”
Honey sighed, “I know, but why don’t you call your partner as back up?”
Trixie’s voice brightened, ”That’s a great idea. I’m going to see Molinson and fill him in on this too.”
“Good,” Honey replied. “I’ll see you in awhile.”
Trixie shut her phone, seeing Dan pull up. She helped her cousin to the car and declined at his offer to drive her home saying she had a few more things to do. After they pulled away, she headed towards the Sleepyside Police Department.
Molinson was in his office and listened carefully to the problem at hand. Finally, he asked, “So, all the Bob-Whites are on red alert, right?”
Trixie frowned, “No, actually. Three of our members have not been told and that’s how I want it. Hallie is too close to having the baby and Dan would tell her if we told him. And Jim doesn’t need any problems now.” she finished forlornly.
Molinson looked at her in surprise, “You mean to tell me that he doesn’t know?”
Trixie shook her head determinedly, “And he won’t find out.”
Molinson nodded, all business. “We’ll have someone patrol around your house and you can have a personal escort as well.”
Trixie shook her head, “No. I have to be inconspicuous. I have my partner from Florida en route to New York as we speak to help with the capture. I will get him put away.”
Molinson didn’t lecture but he promised to keep a look out. After she left, she walked home. Although she worried, she did enjoy the next few days. Jim’s school was amazing. The boys were well behaved and pleaded for more stories of her narrow escapes as a teenager after she told them about Diana’s fake uncle. Jim was oblivious to her suspicious glances and constant checking of her phone.
Trixie’s partner, Alex, flew in Sunday and told everyone he was there on vacation. Trixie received two calls from Jonesy that day, telling her to keep quiet or she would be sorry. When the B.W.G.’s weren’t working she spent her time with them and when they were, she reviewed the case with Alex.
Finally, Friday came and Trixie was once again visiting with Honey when her cell phone rang again. “This is Belden.” She turned her back to Honey. “I understand. I’ll be there directly.”
Honey stared curiously at her friend as she hung up the phone. Trixie turned to her best friend, fear evident in her blue eyes. “It’s time. Call Alex after I leave. Call all of the Bob-Whites and get them here. Dan can be notified but under direct orders to stay home with Hallie. And yes,” Trixie sighed, “call Jim. I’ll be fine.”
She hugged her friend and walked out the front door. Honey immediately called Alex and the Bob-Whites. Hallie was still asleep but Dan promised to pray before hanging up. Mart, Diana, Brian and Jim arrived minutes later. Brian looked at Honey’s face and began pacing.
“I can’t believe she went!” Mart exclaimed through gritted teeth.
“What’s going on?” Jim asked, concerned for his friends. “And where’s Trixie?”
“Jim, sit down.” Alex commanded quietly. Jim obeyed for the first time in his life with no question. “Trixie went to meet with Jonesy.”
“WHAT!?” Jim screamed jumping up. “He’s in jail!” he said, calming down slightly.
“Jonesy escaped from prison three weeks before Trixie came to Sleepyside. After being out a week, he began sending threatening letters to agent Belden and once she got here, she had us check up on him, Hence the welcome home dinner incident. Then the phone calls began. I don’t know how he got her cell number but he did. He’s been telling her that he can’t wait to see her and get even. From what I’ve gathered, she’s sacrificing herself to catch him.” Alex finished and watched Jim carefully.
The redhead put his head in his hands. “This is all my fault. If I hadn’t told her to keep it to herself, she would’ve told me.”
Molinson walked in at that exact moment. “Agent Rodriguez, does Agent Belden have her cell phone?”
Alex nodded and Wendell Molinson turned to the officer at his side. “Get me a G.P.S. reading on her cell phone A.S.A.P.” The officer left the room and Captain Molinson turned to the group. “All we can do is wait.”
Trixie jogged all the way to her destination. She pushed open the door and found Jonesy waiting expectantly. “Nice to see you, detective,” he spat.
Trixie stepped into the room, glaring at the evil man. “Let’s get this over with. Not like it matters,” she said defiantly.
Jonesy tied her arms in front of her. “Oh, it’s going to matter,” he laughed. “It’s time for your punishment.” He wickedly pushed her to her knees.
Molinson took the report from the other officer. “It can’t be.” he said shaking his head.
“What?” Everyone in the room shrieked simultaneously.
“She’s in the gatehouse.” The jaws of everyone in the room dropped.
The men all stood up. Molinson shook his head,” Mart, Brian, you stay here with your families. Alex, come on. Jim, I can’t risk you losing your head.”
Jim wearily shook his head, “Jonesy hurt me enough. I can’t let him hurt her too.”
Molinson nodded and abruptly left the room.
Alex tried to reassure everyone. “She’ll be fine. She’s strong.” before following Jim out the door.
At the clubhouse, the three men crept towards the windows. They saw Jonesy standing in front of Trixie, ranting.
Trixie angrily said, “You’ve got me. Leave him alone!”
Jim shivered as Jonesy laughed.
“You honestly think I want you? Yeah, you’re gonna pay for both of your mistakes but he’s gonna pay too. After you’re dead I’m going to burn his precious little school to the ground and barricade the doors and windows so that no one will escape.” He laughed again and picked up a horsewhip. “Now for your punishment.” Trixie’s face grew determined as he pulled her shirt over her head. “This will hurt, detective. I can’t wait to see you cry.” He drew back his hand and cracked the whip against Trixie’s back. Harder and harder he hit her yet the tears did not come. “Fine, little girl, if that’s how you want to play.” Jonesy picked up Trixie’s gun and aimed it at her head.
Molinson and the other two men burst through the door. Jonesy, stunned to see the three, dropped the gun and tried to run out the door. Jim caught him and wrestled him to the ground. Feeling relief, Trixie passed out.
When Trixie awoke, she was in an ambulance rushing to the hospital. Why am I on my back? she wondered and tried to turn over. “ARRRGH,” she moaned in pain.
An attendant came to her side. “You’ve had yourself quite a beating. We’re almost to the hospital. I believe your family is there waiting.”
Trixie breathed her thanks and fell asleep once again. She awoke once again, this time in a hospital room lying in the bed on her stomach. Thankfully, the staff had left her jeans on and had only removed her bra. She had on a hospital gown, but it wasn’t tied. She looked around and saw Brian leaning over her, bandaging her back. “Bri?” she asked.
“Shhh. I’m almost done…there.”
Brian sat down next to her on the bed and she said, ”Thanks doc, what would I do without you?”
He kissed her forehead as Captain Molinson walked in. “Trixie,” the captain said, “I’m so sorry. We were there but we had to get a confession. Thanks to you, Jim’s school is fire free. No one was hurt but I’ll need you to give a statement once you’re out of here.”
Trixie sat up, gritting her teeth in pain. “Okay Captain. Now, if you’ll excuse me, gentlemen, I need to use the restroom.”
Brian and the captain stood. “Do you want a nurse?” Brian asked quietly.
Trixie shook her head and whispered, “Honey.”
The men left the room and Honey quickly entered. “Hey sis! Let’s get you up!” she said, entirely too cheerful. It didn’t fool Trixie for a minute.
“Honey, where’s Jim?” she asked.
Honey hung her head. “He’s in the waiting room, apologizing up and down to your parents. He feels like it’s all his fault. He was outside the clubhouse. Molinson made him wait. He saw everything…it tore him up.” Honey began crying.
Trixie patted her best friend’s hand and said, “Let’s get me to the bathroom. Then I will go talk to him myself. Okay?” Honey smiled gratefully and helped Trixie stand. When she finished, she washed her hands and walked out into the hallway.
A nurse walked by and said, ”You can’t be out here.”
Trixie gave her a withering glare and said, “Dr. Belden gave me permission.”
After the nurse left, Honey giggled. “Brian is going to be furious,” she muttered as they continued down the hall. At the end, Trixie pushed painfully through the door and walked into the waiting room to find most of the Bob-Whites and her parents.
Brian saw her first and yelled, “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?”
Trixie heard a little girl cry out, “Aunt Trixie, why do you have a big Band-Aid on your back?” Trixie smiled and slowly turned to her niece.
“It’s because I am very stupid. Don’t ever hide anything from your family.” MaKenzie nodded and Trixie grabbed her hand. “Now, Dr. Belden, I believe you were saying something?”
Helen and Peter came up and kissed their daughter. “Why’d you let him hurt you?” Peter asked. “You could’ve taken him.”
Trixie smiled sadly, “It’s not that easy, Daddy. It shouldn’t have happened at all. I couldn’t let him hurt anyone else. I’d rather it be me.”
Jim walked towards her and opened his mouth to speak.
Trixie put up her hand and said, “Please don’t lecture. I know I did the wrong thing but I had no choice. I’ve tried to keep you away from the problems that I have created.” She stopped, seeing the pain etched on his face. She bit her lip and looked down. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. Before she could return to her room, Dan wheeled Hallie through the emergency room entrance. He saw them inside and pushed Hallie towards them.
“Hallie! You’re in labor! Dan sign her in. How are you feeling?” Brian asked, giving Trixie time to bolt.
Inside her room, she walked over to the window. It was then that she felt a tear slip down her cheek.
In the ER, chaos resumed for several minutes before Honey turned to find Trixie gone. Honey sought out Alex and when their eyes met, he held up a hand and headed for his partner’s room where he found her quietly crying by the window. He stood beside her and carefully put an arm around her.
“Why does it have to be so hard?” she cried. “We were finally establishing some sort of friendship and now…now I can never let him know.” She sobbed uncontrollably.
“Shhh. I know. Love does strange things to a person, doesn’t it?” Alex patted her shoulder and turned to see Jim Frayne standing in the doorway. He gently moved Trixie towards the bed and helped her sit down.
“Talk to him,” he whispered in her ear before leaving the room. Jim sat down in a chair by the bed and looked at the ground.
Finally, Trixie couldn’t stand the silence another minute. “Spit it out! Why were you in my doorway?”
Jim replied with a question of his own. “What will I never know?”
Trixie stared at him, eyes flashing. “How long were you there?” she yelled.
“What will I never know?” he yelled back, rising to his feet.
“That I love you!” she yelled and looked away. Jim looked at her, shocked.
A nurse walked in and said, “Sir, if you’re upsetting the patient, I have to ask you to leave.”
He put his hand up to hush the nurse, his eyes never leaving Trixie. “Really?” he breathed.
Trixie could only nod as sobs racked her body. Jim sat next to Trixie on the bed. She looked up and he dried her tears with his thumbs. The nurse quietly stepped out of the room, noticing the change in atmosphere.
“Trixie I’ve loved you since the moment you found me at Ten Acres. I never stopped even though I was a total jerk. Will you forgive me? Please, Shamus, I need you,” Jim begged.
Trixie sniffed and managed a small smile. “Well, I guess it’s good that Captain Molinson has me a job lined up for when I am better.” Jim looked at her incredulously. She leaned into him and kissed him soundly. He immediately responded, running his fingers through her hair.
As they pulled apart, Jim whispered, “I love you Trixie Belden.” He then kissed her nose. Awhile later, Jim asked her, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Trixie sighed, “If I would’ve, you’d have had the same thing done to you. We’d both be in trouble. I’d do anything to keep that jerk away from you.”
Jim kissed her forehead. “I know that and you’d better never do it again.” he threatened.
Brian came in and announced, “Hallie just had her baby. It’s a little girl. Seven pounds, four ounces and twenty one inches long. Her name is Helen Marie Mangan.”
“What a great birthday present!” Trixie exclaimed. “She’s born on my birthday!”
Brian looked at Jim. “Did anyone call Bobby?”
Trixie busted out laughing. “My party! I totally forgot!”
Brian frowned at Trixie’s untouched meal tray. “Why haven’t you eaten?” he asked sternly.
Trixie stubbornly shook her head. “Why would I eat Jell-o? I didn’t hurt my stomach. I want a Big Mac!”
Jim chuckled and Brian shook his head. “I can’t get you that.”
Trixie interrupted, ”Oh yes you can! You never eat hospital food!”
“Come on, please eat something! It’s not poisoned!” Brian pleaded with his sister. “Jim, help would be appreciated!” Brian said to his best friend, who was still smirking. Finally, Brian hung his head in defeat, “Fine. Give me an hour and I’ll bring you McDonald’s. Big Mac meal and lemonade, right?” Trixie grinned triumphantly and nodded. Brian quickly left the room.
Jim turned to Trixie and watched her stand. “What are you doing?” Jim asked curiously.
Trixie grinned. “I need to go meet my favorite cousin. Come on!” she exclaimed, walking to the door. They found Dan a few minutes later standing outside Hallie’s room. “Hey, Danny,” Trixie said quietly.
Dan came to hug her but stopped short. “Your back.”
Trixie nodded, ”I’ll hug you in a few weeks.
Dan nodded, “Brian told me. Do you want to come see Hallie and our baby?”
Trixie laughed at his excitement. “Of course! I didn’t lie to the nursing staff for nothing!” Dan laughed and led them inside. Hallie was resting, dozing in and out of sleep. In her arms was a dark-haired little girl.
“She looks like both of you,” she said quietly, staring at the tiny baby.
Jim nodded in agreement. Dan picked up baby Helen and handed her to Trixie.
The baby grabbed Trixie’s finger and held tight. Trixie began crying, holding her baby cousin. This could’ve been me having a baby, she thought, surprising herself. She sniffed and handed the little girl to Jim and dried her tears. “I’d better be heading back,” she said. “Brian’s bringing McDonald’s.”
Dan chuckled, “That doesn’t surprise me. He’s wrapped around your finger.”
Trixie smiled and nodded, “Thank you, Danny. I’ll see you later.” She turned and walked out into the hallway.
Jim shook his head. “I don’t get it. She jokes about becoming a cat lady, but it’s a total front.”
“It’s about time that you noticed.”
Jim nodded, “I love her.” He handed Helen back to Dan. “Thanks, Dan.” Dan saluted as Jim left the room.
Hallie opened her eyes. ”Nice going,” she exclaimed.
Dan smiled, “I knew you weren’t asleep!” He leaned down and kissed his wife.
Jim hurried down the hall and into Trixie’s room. He found her rummaging through a small duffel bag on the bed.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
She turned to him holding a pair of sweatpants. “Moms brought me stuff to sleep in. I’ll be right back.” Jim grinned and shook his head at upbeat demeanor. A minute later, she returned holding her jeans, the sweatpants now hugging her waist.
She grinned at Jim. “Now, I am fashionable.”
Jim laughed and helped her onto the bed. She patted a spot next to her and Jim sat down.
He looked at her and saw her blush. “What?” he asked.
“Umm, Can I ask you for a favor?” she asked.
Jim took her hands in his and answered, “Anything.”
Trixie turned even redder and looked down. “Will you stay here tonight and hold me? You don’t have to but I…”
Jim tilted her chin upwards and dried her tears. “I love you.” He leaned over and gently pressed his lips against hers. She looked at him, surprised, as he pulled away. Happiness overcame the shock and she smiled. Jim kissed her again, this time more hungrily. Again and again they kissed, Jim parting her lips with his tongue.
Finally, Trixie pushed him away. “We really need to stop.” she smiled breathlessly.
“Just one question. How am I going to hold you with your back tore up?” Jim asked uncertainly.
Trixie broke into a grin. “It doesn’t hurt that much. I’ll be fine. I need you.” She grabbed his arm impulsively.
“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice filled with concern. She pulled him into a searing kiss.
Brian walked into the hospital room fifteen minutes later, McDonald’s bag in hand. “Hey guys, I...” his voice trailed off seeing the sight before him. Jim was on the bed, on his side. Trixie had her back against his chest and his arms engulfed her. The pair was sound asleep and Brain had never seen either one of them more at peace.
Honey walked up behind Brian and said, “Now that is how it is supposed to be.” She hugged her husband tightly. “Maybe we’ll be double sisters after all.” she said hopefully.
Brian turned to her. “Yeah, but what do I do about the food I bought? Couldn’t they have found happiness tomorrow?” he pouted. Honey laughed quietly as he turned off the light, and then followed him out the door.
Trixie sank deeper into her dream as the sun tried to awake her the next morning. Jim unconsciously pulled her closer, to protect her. He quickly pulled away, feeling her tense up in pain.
“No,” she moaned and pulled Jim’s arms tightly back around her.
He buried his face in her curls. “Mornin’,” he murmured, kissing her neck.
Brian walked in, “Good morning, Trixie! I hope you slept well. Sorry to wake you but I have to check your wounds. They need to be re-bandaged.”
Trixie sat up and moaned, “Come on, give me one more hour.”
Jim sat up, rubbing his eyes and stretched. He got up and went to the bathroom. Trixie went afterward. When she came out, Jim was pulling on his shoes.
“Jim? Will you stay and hold my hand?”
Seeing her pleading eyes, his heart melted. He walked towards her and grabbed her hands before looking at Brian. Seeing the look, Trixie said, “Please Bri, let him stay.” Brian nodded and Trixie turned around, her back facing her brother. Jim faced Trixie and held onto her arm as Brian took off the bandages.
Trixie looked at Jim’s face and nodded. “Brian, let him see.” she said quietly. Jim kissed her forehead and went behind her. Silence followed for several moments until Trixie turned to glare at her brother. The sight shocked her. Brian was comforting Jim, who was silently crying. “Oh Jim, it’s not that bad! It hardly hurts anymore.”
Jim took her face in his hands. ”I am so sorry, baby.” He kissed her gently.
Trixie stroked Jim’s face with her finger. “This is not your fault.” she said firmly, ”Jonesy made a choice. I made a choice. I’d do anything for you.” She stood on tiptoe and kissed his tears away.
Jim shook his head, still staring at the young woman in awe. “I don’t know how you’re standing Trix. Jonesy did way worse to you than he ever did to me. There were days I’d lay in bed, in too much pain to move. Don’t give me that crap about it not hurting. I know,” he whispered hoarsely.
Brian moved his sister towards the bathroom and handed her a small mirror. “Look, sis. I think you need to.”
Trixie whirled the mirror around and gasped. Her back, well, what was left of it, was beaten to a bloody pulp. She dropped the mirror and leaned on the wall to steady herself. Her breathing became heavy and she began shaking her head, trying to forget the gruesome picture in her mind.
“Trix,” Brian said quietly as Jim steadied her arm. “I need to clean your wounds and re-bandage them. Are you going to be okay?”
Trixie looked up at her brother and managed a weak smile. “Yeah, just let me lie down first.” Jim led her to the hospital bed and helped her lie down. He sat down in the chair next to the bed and grabbed her hand. Brian immediately cleaned her wounds and added ointment. Trixie locked her eyes on Jim, biting her lip to keep from crying out. Jim’s unoccupied hand continuously brushed her curls from her face. Brian finished quickly, knowing how bad it had to hurt.
“There. All done,” Brian said cheerfully. “Now what do you want for breakfast sis?”
Trixie sat up slowly, face white as a ghost. “I…I’m not very hungry. I’ll wait until lunch.”
Jim stared at the usually rambunctious woman and said, “You need to eat. Come on, don’t make me feed you.”
Trixie smiled and slowly shook her head. “What about you? If I guess correctly, you haven’t eaten since lunch or before, yesterday.” But I’m not sick!” Jim protested.
“Neither am I, but you need to eat.” Trixie turned to Brian, Just have them bring me some toast. Take this he-man out to breakfast, on me.” She grabbed her wallet and produced fifty dollars. “Please guys, take a break. I know for a fact that you don’t usually work today Brian. Jim, you usually have the weekend free too. Please, I’ll rest awhile after I eat and wait for you to come back. Go.” She demanded, pointing at the door. They left and a nurse entered with a tray full of bacon, eggs and toast.” Trixie ate the toast and decided to go see Hallie. She quietly entered the room and sat near the bed, watching Hallie nurse the baby.
“Hey,” Hallie said, breaking into her thoughts. “What’s on your mind? You look ready to cry.”
Trixie shook her head. “Where’s Dan?” she questioned.
Hallie laughed, “Brian, Jim and Mart took him out to eat. They said that they’d struck it rich or something.”
Trixie laughed along. “Yeah, I did give them fifty dollars for food. If you call that rich. I call it peace.”
Hallie groaned, “Tell me about it. Dan hovers over me like I’ll break or something!”
Trixie nodded. “Brian is just as bad and Jim, well, they better release me tomorrow or I will have to beat Jim to get him to go to work.”
Hallie laughed. “What’s with you two anyway? You looked so happy last night when you came in.”
Trixie sighed. “I have to be honest. I was so envious of you last night because I realized that maybe if I’d stuck around, I’d be starting a family. Hallie, what if Jim is only sticking around because he feels obligated because I got rid of Jonesy?”
Hallie’s jaw dropped. “You can’t possibly think that Trixie. Jim was miserable before you came back. Trust me. The only time he tried to be happy was for the opening of his school. It was totally fake. Heck, he even looks better. He’s starting to lose the dark circles under his eyes.”
Trixie blushed. “He sorta fell asleep in my room, holding me. I asked him to as a favor so that I wouldn’t have nightmares.”
Hallie smiled, “He’d walk through fire for you. You’ve gotta know that.”
Trixie shook her head and allowed the tears to fall. “He’s just being nice. It’s guilt, not love. He only said that because he felt obligated… Just like when he asked me out because he knew that I liked him and thought that he was doing me a favor.”
Hallie gasped, finally understanding her cousin’s incoherent babbling. “He told you? Are you stupid? He has grown up. He wouldn’t say it unless he meant it. Do you know how hard it is for him to express those kinds of feelings? My God! He was in denial and refused to even talk about you until this past year!”
Trixie was rendered speechless and before she could compose herself, the four men walked into the room, laughing and joking. Seeing Trixie’s tear stained face and Hallie’s anger ridden one, the men abruptly stopped.
“What’s going on in here?” Brian asked after a moment.
Hallie shook her head. “Nothing, just having a heart to heart. I’ll see you later cousin, okay? Trixie nodded and silently pushed her way through the group and into the hallway.
Dan turned to his wife. “What’s with her?” he asked concerned. Hallie shook her head. “That’s for her to figure out and tell, not me.” Brian nodded and pulled Jim out of the room.
As they entered Trixie’s room, they saw her shoving her few belongings in to the duffel bag. She had on her street clothes and turned to them after zipping it up, tears still evident in her sky blue eyes. “I’m going home Brian and I swear, if you try to stop me, I will flatten you.”
Brian grabbed her arm. “Sis, what’s going on?”
“I am going home. You’re releasing me.” She pushed past them and headed out the door. The boys followed her down the hallway.
“Trix, if you want to leave the hospital, fine. But why are you leaving Sleepyside?”
Trixie turned to them. “I don’t want anyone to feel obligated to stick around or say things that they don’t mean.” Her eyes fell on Jim before she headed for the elevator. She pulled out her cell phone and called Alex, who was staying at the Glen Road Inn.
“Hey Alex...Yeah I’m leaving...Can you do me a favor?...Call Moms and have her pack my stuff...No, I am fine. I’m just ready to go home. Oh, can you also get my ticket changed?...I don’t care, as soon as possible...Thanks so much. I owe you big time...I’m going down to the P.D. to talk to Molinson about the change of plans and then I’ll meet you at the farm. We can leave as soon as I get there... “Thanks a million Alex. Bye.” Trixie turned off her phone and stepped inside the waiting elevator, boys in tow.
Brian pulled out a prescription pad, knowing he couldn’t change her mind. “Sis, I want you to get this filled before you get on the plane. For the pain.” He handed her the prescription. Trixie shoved it into her pocket muttering a thank you.
Jim stood there speechless. What did I do wrong? Everything was fine until we left for breakfast.
“Let me drive you to the police department,” Jim insisted, finding his voice.
Trixie hesitated. “Okay, I’d really appreciate it.” Trixie walked off the elevator and turned to Brian. “I’ll see you around,” she whispered, placing a hand on his arm.
“Make sure you say goodbye to Honey,” he managed as she walked away. Jim started the car and headed towards the P.D. The car was silent until Jim pulled into the parking lot.
Before Trixie got out, Jim grabbed her hand. “Trix, what did I do? Please tell me. I don’t want to lose you,” he pleaded, tears filling his eyes.
Trixie looked out the window. “It’s nothing. I just don’t want you to feel obligated to be around me.” Before he could reply, she hopped out of the car and said, “Don’t wait for me, I’ll get a ride.” She shut the door and walked inside.
I can’t believe this, Jim thought, She thinks I’m doing things to pay her back! Why wouldn’t she, you idiot? You played that card once, didn’t you? Jim slammed his hand on the steering wheel. He then peeled out of the parking lot and towards the school, defeated. She’d leave no matter what he said.
Trixie met with Molinson and gave her statement. Afterward, he asked when she’d be able to start working. He frowned at her hesitance. “Is something wrong?” he asked, concerned.
Trixie nodded. “I just don’t think that this is where I’m supposed to be right now.”
Molinson shook his head. “I was getting used to the idea of having you around. There’s always a place for you here, if you decide that you want it.”
“Thanks, Captain,” Trixie said shaking his hand. “I’ll remember that. By the way, do you have a patrol car heading anywhere near Crabapple Farm? I need a lift.”
The captain smiled, “Of course. Just give me a minute and I’ll take you myself.” Fifteen minutes later, Trixie said goodbye to the captain and walked stiffly towards the farm. Alex was packing the rental car outside. She waved to him and handed him her duffel. “I’m gonna go say goodbye to Moms and Dad and Bobby for a minute. Then we can leave.”
“Hey,” her partner called out to her. “Are you sure about this?”
Trixie nodded and went inside. Her goodbyes were quick as she hugged her parents and went to find Bobby. “Hey,” she said, walking into his room. Bobby was on the computer.
“Moms said you’re leaving.”
“Yeah, I am. I guess you heard about the excitement this weekend.”
Bobby turned around in the computer chair. “This is about Jim, isn’t it? Just like the last time you left. Are you going to wait another ten years before coming back again? According to Honey, you two were doing really well this time. Is it him again or are you just scared?”
Trixie’s temper flared. “You don’t know anything! Neither does Honey! I am going back to Florida whether you like it or not!” Bobby tossed her a package from off of the desk.
He walked out of the room. “See you in another ten.”
Trixie waited until she heard the door slam before going down stairs where she found people everywhere. She quickly hugged Di, and Honey promising to call soon. She then said goodbye to her niece and nephews and hugged them to the best of her ability. Brian and Mart got home and made a beeline for Trixie.
Brian handed her a bottle of pain killers. ”Here, just use the script I gave you as backup okay?” His sister nodded and shoved the bottle into her pocket as Brian continued, “Have your bandages changed at least once a day. I can call a doctor near where you live set it up if you want.”
Trixie shook her head. “I’ll be fine.”
Mart finally spoke up. “Don’t leave like this.”
“I have to,” Trixie whispered. She patted her almost-twin on the arm and went outside to the car. She climbed in and Alex started it. They drove away and headed towards the airport.
Once their flight was called, the partners boarded the plane and Alex asked, “Are you sure you’re okay?”
Trixie smiled and reassured him. “I am great. I just need to be home.”
A week later, Alex was definitely doubting that statement. The day after she returned home, Trixie was back at work. She passed out in pain three different times before her boss put her on medical leave and told her not to come back until she was better. Trixie went home after that and dumped the whole bottle of painkillers into the toilet. She then tore up the prescription as well. Alex found her at the gym the very next day, working out. Trixie was feeling so bad that she had to stop every few minutes to run and throw up in a nearby bucket. The fourth day, Alex called his boss who suggested that he call her family.
Brian hadn’t heard from his sister in a week. Everyone was getting worried, afraid that Trixie wouldn’t bounce back. Jim was in bad shape. He practically lived at the school, holed up in his office and unreachable. Brian was pondering over whether or not he should call his sister, when his phone rang.
Hello?
Brian? This is Alex, Trixie’s partner in Florida.
Brian: Hey, How is she?
Alex: Not so good. Somebody needs to come get her or something. She’s going to hurt herself bad.
Brian: What’s going on?
Alex: Our boss put her on medical leave because she is injured and kept fainting at work. Then she flushed the painkillers and tore up the prescription that you gave her. That was all by Tuesday.
Brian: Okay
Alex: But that’s not all. She now lives at the gym. She’ll like do a kick and have to run and puke in a bucket from the pain. But she won’t stop! I asked her why she was doing it and she told me that if I didn’t like it, to go find another partner. She never says stuff like that, we’re usually pretty close.
Brian: What’s her back look like?
Alex: I don’t know. The lady down the hall is a nurse and she changes it. By noon, whatever shirt she’s wearing is covered in blood. She blows off my concerns and I don’t know how to help her.
Brian: I’ll get the Bob-Whites together today and we’ll figure out something.
Alex: How’s Jim?
Brian: I haven’t seen him since Wednesday. He locked himself in his office. He knows that he screwed up the first time and because of that, he doesn’t think she’ll ever forgive him.
Alex: She loves him. She’s just too scared and stubborn to admit it.
Brian: I don’t know but someone will be there by tomorrow. I just have to figure out how to get Jim to go. I’ll call you back and fill you in on what time he’ll be there if it works.
Alex: Okay. Thanks Brian. I honestly didn’t know what else to do.
Brian: It’s fine. I am glad you called.
Alex: No problem

Brian called all the Bob-Whites, minus Jim. They all agreed to meet at the academy before dinner. Brian also called and filled his parents in on the situation and promised that he had it under control. The group filed into the building, talking quietly.
They went to Jim’s office and found him lying on the couch, apparently studying a file. “Hey guys,” he said dully.
“Jim, we have to talk to you,” Honey said seriously.
“There’s nothing to say,” Jim replied, voice monotone.
Hallie stepped forward. “Jim, you can blame post-pregnancy hormones or you can say that I am a total witch but get off your sorry rear end and go after her! Her partner called and said that she isn’t doing well.”
Jim sat up. “Did she hurt herself?” he asked, concerned.
“She’s pushing herself too hard to get better. Her boss put her on a leave of absence so she spends all day at the gym.” Brian stopped.
Honey added, “She threw away all of the pain medicine Brian gave her and is in so much pain that she is throwing up!”
Jim shook his head. “She won’t listen to me.”
“Then make her!” Mart exclaimed. “Prove to her how much you care.”
Jim looked up at his friends. “Fine, I’ll go. Mart, will take care of the school for awhile? I don’t know how long it’ll take.” Mart nodded and Jim stood. “I better go pack. When is the next flight?” he asked.
Diana handed him a piece of paper. “All of the flight information is on here. The flight leaves at eleven and, by some miracle, it was a straight flight. Honey used her credit card.”
Jim hugged each of his friends in turn. “Thanks guys. I owe you big time.” He stopped at Honey and whispered in her ear, “If this works, I am going to ask her.”
Honey hugged her brother tightly. “Bring her home.”
Jim went home and packed. He fell asleep and slept until his alarm woke him at seven thirty. Jim called a cab to take him to the airport. He was so nervous that he couldn’t eat. He’d talked to Alex, who tried to reassure him but there wasn’t much good to report. The plane landed and Alex met Jim at the gate.
They shook hands and Jim asked, “Where is she?” Alex shook his head.
“Back at the gym. Hopefully still alive when we get there.” The car ride was quiet, neither man knowing what to say. Alex pulled up to the door and said, “If it goes bad, call me and you can bunk at my apartment.”
Jim smiled wryly. “Gee, thanks.” He grabbed his bags and went inside. Trixie was not hard to spot. She was stretching on a mat, boom box blaring. He took a deep breath and walked over and turned off the music.
The young woman whipped around and, seeing Jim growled, “What do you want?”
Jim put up his hands. “I just want to talk to you!”
“I don’t need your pity,” she said coldly.
“I don’t feel sorry for you!” Jim exclaimed angrily.
Trixie walked within an inch of Jim. “Prove it.” She went to the mat and stood expectantly.
“I’m not fighting you,” Jim said, her actions surprising him.
“Why? Do you feel sorry for me?”
Jim kicked off his shoes and walked to the mat.
“If you give it your all, I will sit down and talk to you.”
“Fine,” Jim said, stepping onto the mat. The two faced each other and bowed. Jim took it easy, unsure of what to expect. Trixie threw kicks and punches mercilessly, Jim barely blocking them.
Trixie suddenly stopped. “I thought you didn’t feel sorry for me! You either fight or leave.”
Jim turned angrily and bowed once again and, without a word, began throwing his own punches and kicks. Now totally in her element, Trixie fought back. A few moments later, someone called out to Trixie and she turned to see who it was. Jim took the opportunity to trip her.
She fell to the ground and winced. She could hardly breathe. But Jim didn’t need to know that. Carefully, she pulled herself up and called to the man yelling at her. “Neil, couldn’t your hello have waited until I flattened my opponent here?”
Neil walked over and laughed. “Sorry girlie. That one was my fault. Hello.” the man said, looking at Jim.
Trixie said, “Neil, this is an old friend of mine from New York, Jim. Jim this is my ex-trainer and good friend Neil O’Malley.”
The men shook hands and Neil excused himself. Trixie began cleaning up her CD’s and grabbed her bag.
“Where are you going?” Jim asked. “I thought we were going to talk.”
“We are,” came the reply. “But any conversation that has potential to make me cry does not need to be done in public. Do you have a car?” she asked.
“No. Alex dropped me off.”
“Figures.” Trixie started walking towards the door. “I guess your riding with me. Come on.” Outside, she led him to a sky blue mustang convertible.
Jim whistled. “This is your car? Wow! How much money do they pay you?”
Trixie shook her head. “Not enough. I actually took the bus until about two years ago. I got it for myself for Christmas.”
She got in the driver’s seat and started the car. Jim got in and Trixie turned up the radio before heading out onto the road.
When they arrived, Trixie said, “I need to take a shower before I do anything else.”
Jim nodded and followed her inside. Looking around, Jim was amazed. Trixie’s apartment was small but cozy. It was very clean and reminded him of Crabapple Farm.
Trixie tossed Jim two remotes. “This one is for the T.V. and this one is for the stereo.” She gestured around her. “You’re welcome to look around; it’ll only take a few minutes in the shower. There’s plenty to eat and drink in the fridge. Take whatever you want. Make yourself comfortable.”
Trixie quickly disappeared, leaving Jim standing in her living room.
He looked around and headed for the stereo. Realizing that it was quite complicated, he went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Inside was more food than one person could ever eat. As far as Jim knew, there was more food in Trixie’s apartment than in Mart’s whole house!
He grabbed a Coke and shut the door. Heading back to the stereo, he pushed a button on the remote. Music began playing softly and Jim forced himself to calm down. He sat down on the couch and noticed a few pictures on the tables. He leaned forward to look at them and recognized all the Bob-Whites at Disneyland, minus him of course, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Trixie was on her knees in the middle of the four children. Everyone was so happy. He looked at the picture next to it and chuckled. Trixie was standing with Captain Hook, who looked like he was going to slit her throat any time. Other pictures of her niece and nephews were scattered around on the tables along with a few of the B.W.G.’s the year that Dan and Mart graduated.
Without realizing it, Jim hit the volume button to the stereo and the music became deafening. Luckily, Trixie had finished in the bathroom and came out to investigate. She found a flustered Jim frantically pressing buttons. She quickly took the remote and turned off the music.
“Man, I think this one is harder to figure out than Mart’s and he’s a techno geek,” Jim said embarrassed. Trixie smiled and Jim looked at her strangely. “I haven’t ever seen your hair down. I… it looks nice.”
Trixie blushed and asked, “Are you hungry? I know we have to talk but I am not able sit still long enough to get through a whole conversation right now.”
Jim nodded. “I noticed the excessive amounts of food in your fridge. What are you going to make?”
“I have some dough in the fridge. We can make a pizza. You can start by washing your hands.” Jim did as he was told and Trixie soon had him shredding cheese. She then said, “You wanted to talk to me.”
She began rolling out the dough and Jim started talking. “I know that I hurt you when we were younger and you have no idea how sorry I am for being so ignorant. At the time, I felt like everyone wanted to see us together, so I asked you out. I figured it was payback for helping me. God, I was so stupid. I realized the day you left that I had lost the best thing in my life. The only thing I truly cared about. I didn’t just like you as a friend. I never had. When you came back, I hoped that I was getting a chance to show you how much that I truly care. I see how you could think that everything I ever said to you was obligation but I swear that it’s not.” Jim, by this time had shredded enough cheese for seven pizzas and put the grater down. “And then, you said that you still cared about me. I couldn’t believe it. I mean, you certainly proved it but I always thought you deserved better than me. I love you!” He walked towards her and turned her to face him. He ran a finger down her cheek. “I wouldn’t be here begging forgiveness if I didn’t,” he said softly.
Trixie turned and pulled the pizza out of the oven. “You eat. I ate before you met me at the gym.” She grabbed a stack of unopened mail and shuffled through it absently, deep in thought. Jim began eating and noticed how the beautiful woman kept shoving her hair out of her eyes.
Jim stood up and put his plate on the counter. “Let’s go sit in the living room and talk some more. Trixie stood and followed him.
“You ate well,” she commented nervously.
“You’re a great cook.” Trixie sat on the couch and Jim sat beside her, neither knowing what to say.
It’s now or never Frayne. Bite the bullet! Take charge! Out loud he said, “I need to know, do you love me?”
Trixie looked at the floor and nodded, afraid of what might come next.
“Trixie, look at me.” Jim said, tilting her chin upward. She looked at him fearfully, not sure if she wanted to know what came next. “I need you in my life. You. No one else. I am scared as anything that I am going to lose you but I can’t be without you another minute.” Jim sank to the ground and Trixie’s eyes widened in disbelief as pulled out a jewelry box. He opened it to reveal his great aunt’s engagement ring that Trixie had given back to him before she went to college. “I will never take you for granted again. For better of for worse. I love you. Will you marry me?”
Trixie allowed the tears to fall freely as she pulled Jim off the floor and jumped into him arms. “Of course I will,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around his neck. Jim marveled at how perfectly she fit into his arms. He pulled her hair around her shoulder and kissed her neck. As he tightened his grip on her, Trixie pushed away slightly. “My back,” she whispered and Jim let go.
“I am so sorry, sweetie.”
Trixie pulled his arm towards the couch.
As he sat down, Trixie said, “I don’t want you to be sorry. I love you.” Jim smiled and slid the ring on her finger and kissed her hand. “Perfect,” she said smiling happily.
The End
Disclaimer: There are 11,150 words in this story. I wrote this story but I’m not getting paid…please don’t sue me!! I am using Trixie Belden characters without permission from Random House. Neil O’Malley is a character of my own design. MaKenzie, Braden, Patrick and Michael are my creations as well. My story is completely fictional; I honestly don’t think that college goes by in three or less, especially to be an F.B.I agent. I also don’t know if anyone noticed, but Trixie’s partner is Alex Rodriguez who is a baseball player in real life and the only one I have ever actually heard of. I used McDonald’s and it’s Big Mac without their permission. I also know that it takes awhile to get a GPS reading…just my impatient brain I guess. I also do not like to write Trixie as this emotional. I usually go by how I am feeling and I had a bad couple of weeks so please forgive me!
