Seven Steps to Paradise

by Treanna

Step One

Matthew Wheeler leant back on his chair and stretched. It had been a long day and he was tired. He looked on his desk and saw the photos of his wife and two children. He smiled as he remembered the conversation he had had with his daughter and her best friend the night before.

He looked up as he saw a red flash passed his door. "Jim, is that you?"

A head appeared around the corner. "Yeah, Dad, it’s me."

"Have you a few minutes to talk?"

Jim walked into the room and smiled at his father. "For you, anytime."

"Feeling rested after your adventures at Happy Valley?"

Jim sat down and nodded. "I slept like a log last night, though."

"I heard about all your adventures but you didn’t tell me about what happened on the plane?"

"What?"

"Something about an I.D. bracelet."

He watched as his son’s face reddened slightly.

"Who told you?"

"When Trixie and Honey brought the horses back from their ride last night, I saw it on Trixie’s wrist. Honey was only to happy to tell me where Trixie had got it from."

"Terrific."

"So, it is a huge secret, is it?"

"No. But, gee, Dad, Honey has been teasing Trixie and me ever since she found out that I had bought it for her."

"Why did you buy it, Jim?"

Jim thought for a moment. "Trixie is a great girl, Dad. She gets into all these adventures but is so smart about how she figures them out. But lately I have begun to realise that there is more to Trixie than being a tomboy. She is becoming a real pretty girl and other guys are beginning to notice that."

"How does that make you feel?"

"When we were at the dance and she was dancing with Ned, I actually was jealous. When we have dances here we tend to pair up a lot, but there she danced with so many guys I couldn’t count. I just wanted her to know that she is special to me."

"Like boyfriend and girlfriend?"

"I don’t think Mr or Mrs Belden would like Trixie to be involved in a relationship like that at the moment. She is just too young."

His father smiled and then stood up. "I have something to show you, son." He walked over to a framed document on his wall. "Have you read this before?"

Jim shook his head.

"Then read it and tell me what you think?"

Jim began to read.

SEVEN STEPS TO PARADISE

There are seven steps to paradise.

The first is to realise about a girl.

The second is a kiss that will rock your world.

The third is to realise you are in love.

The fourth is to say, marry me my dove.

The fifth is the wedding when she is the star,

The sixth is the honeymoon, ohhh, la la.

But the seventh is the most important of all,

The rest of your life to enjoy it all.

Jim read it again and then looked at his dad. "Kind of corny, isn’t it?"

Matthew Wheeler laughed. "That is what I said to my dad, too, when he showed it to me when I was about your age."

"So what does it really mean?"

"You have just begun to see Trixie as a girl, so you are just beginning step one."

"And if that is true, when does step two happen?"

Matthew put his arm around his son.  "You can’t rush these things, Jim. You will know when the time is right if she is the girl you want to kiss."

Jim frowned at his father. "I think I am more tired than I thought. I might go and lie down for a while."

Matthew laughed again. "You do that, son."

Jim gave his father a hug. "I am glad that you adopted me."

Matthew hugged him back. "So am I, son, so am I."

Jim walked up to his room and walked towards the window. He could see Trixie and Honey walking arm in arm towards the clubhouse. He smiled as he remembered what his father had said.

Then on sudden impulse he went downstairs and headed for the clubhouse.

I may not know what the future holds,  he thought to himself, but I am determined to enjoy the ride.

He hurried to catch the girls.

Step Two

Jim Frayne walked outside and took a deep breath. He smiled as he walked down the steps. His prom last night had been better than he could imagine and now he was an official college man. He pounded his fists on his chest, like Tarzan, but refrained from calling.

He then headed for the clubhouse. The Bob-Whites had arranged to meet there after breakfast.

When he got there the door was already open. He was about to walk in when he heard his name mentioned. So he stood by the door and listened.

"I thought that you had a good night last night, Trix?" Honey asked.

"I did, but--" Jim heard her sob and his heart stopped. What had upset her so much that she was crying?

"But what, Trix?"

"I wanted him to--" She started to say. "But he didn’t do 'it'."

Jim was so shocked that he was frozen in place.

"Why didn’t you instigate 'it'?"

"I didn’t know how. I haven’t done 'it' before."

"Well, I don’t think that Jim has either."

"But he was almost fifteen when we met him and many boys do it before then. I know lots of boys that have. I know that Mart has and I know that Brian has with you."

Jim clenched his fists.  Brian is dead,  he thought.

"So what was it like?" Trixie asked and Jim heard Honey laugh.

"The first time it was a little scary and we were both pretty innocent. But every time we do it, it gets better and I feel like I am quite an expert now."

"You are so lucky. I wish that I could go and find Jim now and knock him down and do it."

"Then, why don’t you?"

"What if he rejects me?"

"You know how he feels about you."

"I thought I did. But all he ever does is look at me sweetly and occasionally hold my hand. I even picked a dress for last night that was slightly provocative and I thought that would be enough to maybe set his hormones raging. But I never got more than a quick kiss on the cheek when he left last night. I wanted to do 'it' in his car last night. I was hoping he would stop somewhere on the way home but we didn’t. He took me straight home."

"We didn’t. Brian found a lovely quiet spot overlooking the river and we stayed there for ages before he took me home."

Really dead, Jim thought.

"So now what do I do?" Trixie asked.

"Do you want me to talk to Jim for you?"

"If Jim hasn’t done 'it' before he goes away to college, then I will be sure that he is not interested in me as more that just a friend."

"Hey, Jim."

Jim looked up and was surprised, and angry, to see Brian walking towards him.

"Why are you standing outside? Are you waiting for someone?" asked Brian.

Jim looked at him and then turned when he heard movement. Trixie  stood right beside him, a shocked look on her face.

"How long have you been here?" she demanded.

But she did not even have to ask. The slight blush on his face was enough to tell her. She put a hand to her mouth and gasped. She then hurried past him and her brother, a sob escaping from her.

Brian looked at Jim. "What have you done to my sister?"

Jim turned to him in anger. "Obviously not what you have done to mine. After I have seen to Trixie, you and I are going to have a talk about 'it'."  He   hurried away.

Brian turned to Honey. "Okay, what did I miss?"

"Trixie was upset because she thinks that Jim is not interested in her because he left her last night with a kiss on her cheek."

Brian thought for a moment and then laughed.

"What?" Honey said.

"Jim obviously heard what you two were saying, right?"

"By the look of it. So?"

"Were you talking about what we did last night?"

She nodded. And then she laughed. "Oh, I see."

She then took his hand. "It looks like we have a few minutes. Do you want to do it now?"

He laughed as he pulled her into the clubhouse and shut the door.

*     *     *

Jim hurried towards the stables. He knew that whenever Trixie was upset that is where she would head.

As he hurried in, he stopped suddenly.  Katherine, Regan's new wife, had her arm around Trixie and was talking to her quietly. She looked up and frowned when she saw Jim. She then nodded him over. As he got closer, Kat said something to Trixie and she turned quickly around and then turned back as quickly.

"I will leave you two to talk," Kat told them. She frowned again at Jim before she left the stable.

Jim did not know what to say. He had heard everything that had been said and did not know how to talk to Trixie.

He put his hand on her shoulder and was surprised when she turned and threw herself into his arms crying.

He put his arms around her and she put her arms around his waist. "I am sorry that I made you cry," he spoke into her hair. "I didn’t know that you felt that way."

"When you didn’t last night, I thought that you did not feel the same way about me that I felt about you."

"You looked so beautiful last night, but we are still so young and I know that your parents would not be happy for you to make any commitment yet."

"But you are going away to college and you are going to meet some beautiful women there and mousy old me will just fade into your memory."

He laughed. "You are not mousy, Trix, and no one who has ever met you would ever forget you."

She looked up at him and he smiled. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief. He gently wiped the tears from her eyes and then gently touched her cheek.   "Did I tell you last night that you were the most beautiful girl at the prom?"

She shook her head.

"Well, then I'm telling you now.  Miss Belden, you were the most beautiful girl there last night and I'm so proud that you went with me." He reached down and kissed her ever so gently on her lips. When he looked down at her again, he was distressed to see her crying again. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that."

"Oh, yes, you should," she told him. "I have been waiting for you to kiss me forever."

"Really?"

She smiled. "So much so that I am hoping that you will kiss me again."

And he did.

Timeless moments later, Jim again looked down at Trixie. "Didn't we have to be at the clubhouse a while ago?"

She nodded. "They will be wondering where we are."

"I have to talk to Brian anyway."

"What about?"

"Just something that I have to talk to him about."

"Sounds mysterious."

He hugged her close to him. "Nothing to worry about."

They walked arm in arm towards the clubhouse to meet the other Bob-Whites.

Honey looked up as they walked in. Her face broke into a huge grin.  "Looks like my brother has finally decided to do 'it'."

Jim’s face flamed up. "We did not."

Trixie turned to him. "So, what did we do then?"

"We kissed, that's all."

Brian smiled. "So what do you think 'it' is?"

Jim opened his mouth to speak and then realised what they meant.

"I thought that you meant--"

"Sex?" Mart laughed and Jim blushed again.

"I think that we are a little young for that, Jim, don't you?" Honey said.

"I did,  but when I heard you talking it seemed that is what you were talking about."

"So that's what you wanted to talk to Brian about?" Trixie said.

Brian laughed. "I expected a fist in the face."

"I was expecting to give one," Jim replied.

Trixie put her arm around Jim. "When Honey, Di, and I were younger we thought that kissing was icky. So we referred to a kiss as 'it' because none of us liked to talk about it."

"And now?" he prompted.

"Now, I have found out that the only thing wrong about 'it' is that you we cannot do it more often."

She smiled up at him and he smiled back.

"Well, we will have to see about righting that wrong, Trix."

She grinned. "I will agree to that."

To Be Continued

I originally wrote this poem for another story I wrote that is not Trixie related. But I thought I wonder how Trixie and Jim cope with this one. You all may have an idea how it turns out but like Jim I hope you enjoy the ride.

Two down and five to go.
