I Won't Say It
by Funshine
Trixie Belden, twenty-two, rambled through the preserve. She had just escaped the engagement party of her friend Jim and his fiancée, Meghan Blythe. Jim and Trixie used to go out, but they grew apart. Trixie later learned that Jim had met Meghan while they had been going out. They had met quite a few times. Meghan had not known that Jim was going out with Trixie. Trixie was happy for Jim, and she, despite what her older brothers, Brian and Mart, thought, liked Meghan. Meghan was a very nice person.
Trixie had left the part to get away from her ‘date.’ Honey and Di, her friends, had set her up with a health inspector named John. John had red hair and looked exactly like Jim. John was nothing like Jim, though. John was very, very boring, and so strict on the rules! He was, in Trixie’s book, a total creep like her boyfriend Jacob. Trixie had started going out with Jacob a month after Jim and she had split. She had loved Jacob, and she thought he loved her, too. But it became apparent that he was not only not in love with her, but also a major creep. Trixie had found him kissing another girl at the movie theater.
As she walked closer to the place she was seeking, she heard the chop of an ax.
“Dan? What are you doing?” Trixie was surprised; she thought everyone was still at the party.
Dan Mangan was an old friend. He looked up and wiped a black brow. “Hey, Trix. I was just chopping this for Maypenny. He’s getting a little too old to be chopping wood. I wanted to make sure he had a whole supply before I leave again. What are you doing out here?”
“Escaping Mr. Health Inspector. I have no idea what Honey and Di were thinking when they set me up with him!”
“I see. Hey, what happened to that Josh guy?” Dan had been in Minnesota for a while.
“Jacob,” Trixie corrected, “He’s a pig.”
“Oh.” Dan sensed that this was dangerous territory. “Want to go for a walk?”
“But what about the wood?”
“It can wait.”
“Okay then.” Trixie smiled.
Dan smiled too; he was happy that Trixie was happy. The two walked and talked companionably. Dan told her about his exploits in Minnesota, and about how glad he was to be coming back to New York. He told her about his job, and his friends. Trixie noticed he didn’t say anything about a ‘special’ girl. Trixie told him about where she worked and about people she had met.
She even told him about her sour relationships. The best thing about talking to Dan was he was, genuinely interested. Trixie noticed that he really seemed to care.
“...and so that’s how I found them. I really thought he loved me. Am I just dumb, and unlovable?” Trixie had been telling him about Jacob.
Dan was distressed to see that Trixie was close to tears. “Oh, Trix, you are not dumb, and you are very lovable!” Dan protested. “I mean any guy who doesn’t see that and who doesn’t know how lovable you are must be a raving lunatic!”
Trixie snorted, but Dan was gratified to see a smile.
“Thanks, Dan.”
Dan picked a wild flower and handed it to her. The two had come into a clearing, and there was a large rock. They sat on it.
“If I was Josh, I’d never even see another girl, I’d be to wrapped up in your beauty.”
“Jacob.” Trixie smiled; she leaned tentatively into a kiss Dan was waiting. Before their lips met, though, a shout was heard. “I found them!” It was Mart.
Trixie groaned and slapped her forehead. Dan winked at her. Mart, Brian, Honey, and Di emerged into the clearing.
“Where on earth have you been? We’ve been looking everywhere for you two!” Mart yelled good naturedly.
“I wanted to get Maypenny some wood chopped,” Dan said.
“And I was escaping my da- I mean I was getting some air. I ran into Dan,” Trixie explained.
“John left,” Honey assured her. “We’re sorry we didn’t know he was like that.”
“Hey, he wasn’t that bad,” Brian said. “Want some help Dan?”
“That would be great!” Dan agreed; the three boys left together.
As soon as they were out of earshot Honey started.
“Goodness, Trixie, you look like a love sick puppy.”
“I am not in love with anyone, thank you, Miss Wheeler,” Trixie sniffed.
“Oh yeah? You look like Honey does whenever Brian’s name is mentioned,” Di shot.
Immediately Honey’s face changed, then she flushed.
“See?” Di laughed.
Trixie shrugged, “Whatever guys. I am not in love with Dan.”
Honey and Di exchanged glances, “Who said anything about Dan?”
“I was talking about John,” Honey said innocently.
“So was I.” Di batted her long, dark eyelashes.
Trixie blushed. “Ha-ha, very funny guys.”
“So you do like him!” Di exclaimed.
“I guess so. He’s a great guy.”
Trixie wandered to look out over the valley she could see Dan, Mart, and Brian working. She smiled. She delicately fingered the flower.
“So where’d ya get the flower?” Honey asked.
“Dan,” Trixie replied meekly.
“I can see it now, can I be maid of honor at the wedding?” Honey wanted to know.
“Guys, come on,” Trixie groaned. “I cannot be in love with Dan.”
“Oh and why not?” Di wanted to know.
Trixie, instead or replying in a normal voice, sang the song the girls knew by heart:
“If there’s a prize for rotten judgment, I guess I’ve already won that.
No man is worth the aggravation.
That’s ancient history- been there, done that.”
Honey joined in with:
“Who’d’ya think you’re kiddin’
He’s the Earth and heaven to you.
Try to keep it hidden.
Honey, we can see right through you.”
Di sang:
“Girl ya can’t conceal it.
We know how ya feel and
who you’re thinking of-“
Trixie interrupted:
“No chance, no way, I won’t say it, no, no-“
Honey and Di interrupted her:
“You swoon, you sigh, why deny it, uh-oh!”
Trixie stopped them:
“It’s too cliché.
I won’t say I’m in love!
I thought my heart had learned it’s lesson.
It feels so good when you start out.
My head is screaming, get a grip, girl, Unless you’re dying to cry your heart out! Oh!”
Honey and Di continued:
“You keep denying,
who you are and how you’re feeling.
Baby, we’re not buying.
Hon, we saw ya hit the ceiling.
Face it like a grown-up.
When ya gonna own up
that ya got, got, got it bad?”
Trixie stopped them:
“No chance no way, I won’t say it, no, no, no-“
Honey interrupted:
“Give up, give in.
Check the grin, you’re in love-"
Trixie stopped her:
“This scene won’t play,
I won’t say I’m in love
Honey and Di approached again:
“You’re doin’ flips, read our lips:
You’re in love-"
Trixie huffed:
“You’re way off base, I won’t say it.
Get off my case, I won’t say it-"
Di stopped her with a stare and started:
“Girl, don’t be proud.
It’s O.K. You’re in love!”
Trixie stopped. “Guys, I wanna check something. I’ll be at the house in a minute. Don’t wait for me.”
Honey and Di looked at each other. When was Trixie going to admit it?
As soon as the girls left, Trixie finished the well-known song, “Ohhhhhh, at least I won’t say it out loud, I won’t say I’m in love.”
Trixie sat on the rock and shook her head. “I can’t be in love.”
A dark figure stepped out of the shadows behind her. He placed one hand over her mouth and pulled her back with him. “You won’t ever be able to say a thing again,” he snarled viciously.
The End
There's the end, kidding, no really. That is the end, but expect a sequel to come up soon.
The song used, is called I Won’t Say (I’m In Love) It’s from Disney’s Hercules. I was watching it, and this whole thing laid out in front of me. Are you worried about Trixie?
Do you think Dan and she will end up together?
What’s going on with the boys?
Will Jim and his girl make an appearance?
What about Trixie’s other boys?
It will all be answered in the sequel: Maybe I should
Say It
Note: sequel title may change
